Kingswear

Kingswear is a place in the South Hams in the southern English county of Devon . It is located on the east bank of the mouth of the Dart River and has around 1400 inhabitants.

Kingswear is known as the terminus of the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway . Dartmouth can be reached by ferry across the river. In Kingswear there are a few smaller shops for tourist supplies as well as a few public houses . Kingswear Castle , a fortified artillery position from the 15th century, is located on the river outside the village and is privately owned. The place also has a church, renovated in 1847, which belongs to the Anglican Diocese of Exeter and which is dedicated to the patron saint St. Thomas of Canterbury.

It is believed that the place was founded in early Anglo-Saxon times. Kingswear is first mentioned in the history books in 1170 when William de Vinci gave land to the local parish. It's not entirely clear why Kingswear hasn't done as well as Dartmouth on the other bank. The sea travelers ended up in Kingswear on their way to the grave of Thomas Beckett in Canterbury .

The Kingswear train station opened on August 16, 1864. Passengers to South Africa or other parts of the world found accommodation at the Royal Dart Hotel .

More recently, Kingswear has been the location for feature films such as " The French Lieutenant's Woman " and various TV series. Thanks not least to the local Royal Dart Yacht Club , the majority of the participants in the annual Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta are berthed at Kingswear.
