Kingswear Castle

Kingswear Castle is a sea wall near the village of Kingswear on the south coast of the English county of Devon . It was built between 1491 and 1502. English Heritage has listed it as a Grade I Historic Building .

Because of the limited range of the cannons at that time, the fort at Kingswear was built to protect together with Dartmouth Castle on the opposite bank of the River Dart its estuary and the narrow entrance to the port of Dartmouth against the attack of enemy ships. As gun technology improved and the range of the guns increased, new gun emplacements were built at Dartmouth Castle, the guns of which could shoot further out onto the estuary. Kingswear Castle was no longer needed.

Unlike Dartmouth Castle, Kingswear Castle is owned by the Landmark Trust and is not open to the public.
