Dartmouth Castle is a castle at the mouth of the Dart River near Dartmouth in Devon in Great Britain .

location

Together with Kingswear Castle on the opposite bank, it protected the harbor against intruders from the sea. Immediately adjacent is the church of St Petroc's.

history

There has been a fortress here since 1388. The current structure is the oldest surviving English coastal fortress built for cannons. It was built between 1481 and 1495 and was expanded in the 16th and 17th centuries. Dartmouth Castle was used as a fortress until the 19th century. From the castle a chain could be stretched across the water to Kingswear Castle on the other side. In the event of a defense, this blocked the entry or exit of the River Dart and thus protected the city of Dartmouth and its hinterland.

Today the castle belongs to the English Heritage and can be visited for a fee.
