South Hams is a district in the county of Devon in England . The administrative seat is the city of Totnes ; other significant locations are Berry Pomeroy , Dartmouth , Ivybridge , Kingsbridge , Kingswear , Modbury , Salcombe and South Brent . To the north lies a substantial part of the Dartmoor National Park.

The district was formed on April 1, 1974 and was created from the merger of the municipal boroughs of Dartmouth and Totnes, the urban districts of Kingsbridge and Salcombe and the rural districts of Kingsbridge, Plympton St Mary and Totnes. In 1967 the cities of Plympton and Plymstock had been separated and merged with Plymouth .
