North Devon is a district in the county of Devon in England . The administrative seat is the city of Barnstaple ; other important places are Fremington , Ilfracombe , Lynton and South Molton .

geography

The district is in northeast Devon . It is bounded in the south by the District Mid Devon and in the southwest by District Torridge . To the north is the Bristol Channel , to the west is Bideford Bay . To the east is Somerset . The district is part of the Exmoor National Park and is located on the River Taw . Next to this is the North Devon AONM Nature Reserve in the district, through which the South West Coast Path runs.

history

The district was formed on April 1, 1974 and was created from the merger of the Municipal Borough Barnstaple , the Urban Districts Ilfracombe and Lynton and the Rural Districts Barnstaple and South Molton .
