Railway line Striberg – Degerfors to Degerfors

The Striberg – Grängen (SGJ) railway was a narrow-gauge Swedish railway line . It was built by the Striberg – Grängens järnvägsaktiebolag between Grängen and Striberg in Bergslagen . The line connected to the Vikern – Möckelns Järnväg in Striberg nedre , where there were reloading facilities to the standard gauge Nora – Karlskoga Järnväg .

history

When the Nora – Karlskoga järnväg opened the branch line to Striberg in 1874, it received the concession on September 11 for a standard gauge extension of the line to Järnboås . In 1876 there was a concession for a railway line of the Nora-Karlskoga Järnväg from Nora via Striberg to Grythyttan and "further to the region where the Vanån meets the Västerdalälven " ( Vansbro ). The necessary capital for these routes could not be obtained and none of the railways were built. Only ten years later these plans were resumed.

On December 13, 1884 the board of directors of Nora – Karlskoga järnväg reached an agreement with the mining companies and other companies. Afterwards, interested parties should provide the required land free of charge. The technical facilities as well as the train stations were about a fifth of the building capital. Nora – Karlskoga järnväg would do the rest and take over the operation of the line. The cost estimate for a 28.2 km long railway line with a gauge of 802 mm was 480,000 crowns . Vehicles were not included in this total.

On December 4, 1885, a number of private individuals received a concession for a narrow-gauge railway between Striberg and Grängen with a gauge of 802 mm.

Striberg – Grängens Järnvägsaktiebolag

The concession was handed over to the newly founded Striberg – Grängens järnvägsaktiebolag , which was a wholly owned subsidiary of Nora – Karlskoga järnväg .

Construction of the line began in 1886. On December 1, 1887, the line was opened for public use. All shares belonged to Nora – Karlskoga järnvägsaktiebolag . The route had a minimum radius of 150 meters and a maximum gradient of 25.5 ‰. The rails weighed 21 kg per meter . Two branch lines were also built. They led to Petersfors bruk , 1.3 km and to Rössbergs gruvor , 3.4 km. In Grängen the transport route to Bredsjö – Grängens trafikaktiebolag , which led across the lakes to Hjulsjö and there connected to a horse-drawn tram to Bredsjö.

In 1888 a 400 meter long siding to Lindesbyhyttan was built.

Striberg – Grängens Järnväg bought a locomotive and 20 freight cars for the opening. The traffic was provided by Vikern-Möckelns Järnväg. The number of freight cars was increased to a total of 60 in 1888.

Bredsjö – Degerfors Järnväg

1893 applied for Nora-Karlskoga Järnvägsaktiebolag , the railway Striberg-Degerfors the Vikern-Möckelns järnvägsaktiebolag , the railway line Striberg-Grängen the järnvägsaktiebolag Striberg-Grängen and the railway Bredsjö-Grängen the Bredsjö-Grängens trafikaktiebolag into a single 97-kilometer railway line to merge. In November 1893, the king approved the merger. On April 20, 1894, the 97 km long narrow-gauge Bredsjö – Degerfors Järnväg (BDJ) was formed.

Re-gauging

The company decided in 1903 to convert the Striberg – Grängen – Bredsjö section to standard gauge with 1435 mm. The converted line became part of Nora Bergslags Järnväg on November 15, 1907 . During the renovation, a short section was built between the newly built Striberg station - it was the third station in town - and the narrow-gauge railway embankment to Bålsjön (Bälgsjön). This new line ended at Sågheden and the Klacka-Lerberg station was relocated. There were also minor line improvements.

Nora Bergslags Järnvägsaktiebolag

After a financial reconstruction, Nora – Karlskoga Järnvägs bought the assets of Striberg – Grängens Järnväg in 1905 , which became part of the newly formed Nora Bergslags Järnvägsaktiebolag .

Decommissioning and dismantling

All branch lines were discontinued and dismantled in 1907 in connection with the conversion to standard gauge.

Passenger traffic on the standard gauge line was stopped on May 22, 1966 and freight traffic on June 11, 1979. The Grängen – Striberg line was dismantled in 1979/1980 by Nora Bergslags Järnväg.

Slotterberget – Grängen horse-drawn tram

Mining of ore in Slotterberget began in the mid-1700s and continued through the late 1920s. A 2.7 km long horse-drawn tram led from the mining area to Grängen, where the ore was loaded onto barges. The old track bed is visible in several places and can be traveled on by bike.
