Railway line Striberg – Grängen to Striberg

The Bredsjö – Grängen (BGJ) railway was a narrow-gauge Swedish railway line . It was built by Bredsjö – Grängens trafikaktiebolag between Bredsjö and Grängen in Bergslagen .

Bredsjö – Grängens Trafikaktiebolag

Several ironworks in Bergslagen, including in Uddeholm , Bofors , Bredsjö and Hellefors , founded a joint transport company in 1882, the Bredsjö – Grängens Trafikaktiebolag , which was to build a transport route from the mining region of Nora and Hjulsjö around Hulsjö to Bredsjö station on Bergslagsbanan . Completed in 1886, this trail consisted of a 25,000 Swedish foot (approx. 7.5 km) long horse tram with a gauge of 2.5 ft (742 mm) from Bredsjö to Hjulsjö and a sea route across Hjulsjön and Lake Grängen that crossed the Bornsälven joined the village of Grängen .

From 1887, the Striberg – Grängen railway was connected in Grängen . Since the sea route was frozen over in winter, it was planned in 1891 to extend the horse-drawn tram from Hjulsjö to Grängen. In addition, a 2,200-foot horse-drawn tram was built between Nyhyttan (Södra Hyttan) and Lake Grängen, which connected to the existing transport route.

Bredsjö – Grängens Trafikaktiebolag did not have its own locomotives, because the traffic was carried out together with Striberg – Grängens Järnväg and Vikern – Möckelns Järnväg from the start . Vikern – Möckelns Järnväg acquired 40 freight wagons in 1893 for future traffic on the Bredsjö – Grängen line.

Striberg – Grängens Järnvägsaktiebolag

In the meantime, Nora – Karlskoga Järnvägsaktiebolag showed interest in the route. As a subsidiary which was Striberg-Grängens Järnvägsaktiebolag founded in January 1893 90,000 crowns the Bredsjö-Grängens Järnväg bought up.

The horse tram was not expanded. Instead, on July 14, 1893, the former Bredsjö – Grängens Järnväg and what is now Striberg – Grängens Järnvägsaktiebolag were granted a concession to build a line. Construction work began on November 27 of the same year. The new section of the route was built and the previous horse-drawn tram was provided with new rails. Bridges were built over the rivers at Hjulsjö and Nyhyttan (Södra Hyttan).

Bredsjö – Degerfors Järnväg

The route was opened to public traffic on September 1, 1894. At this point in time, the Striberg – Grängens järnvägsaktiebolag had already been dissolved and integrated into the newly founded Bredsjö – Degerfors Järnväg . Rails weighing 22 kilograms per meter were used on the 15 kilometer long route, which was built with a gauge of 802 mm.

In 1893 had Nora-Karlskoga Järnvägsaktiebolag requested the railway Striberg-Degerfors the Vikern-Möckelns järnvägsaktiebolag , the railway Striberg-Grängen the järnvägsaktiebolag Striberg-Grängen and the railway Bredsjö-Grängen the Bredsjö-Grängens trafikaktiebolag to a single 97-kilometer railway line merge. In November 1893, the king approved the merger. On April 20, 1894, the 97 km long narrow-gauge Bredsjö – Degerfors Järnväg (BDJ) was formed.

In 1903 it was decided that the Striberg – Grängen – Bredsjö section should be converted to standard gauge with 1435 mm.

Nora Bergslags Järnvägsaktiebolag

This standard gauge line was opened on November 15, 1907 as part of the Nora Bergslags Järnväg . In connection with the renovation, minor line corrections were made.

Nora – Karlskoga Järnvägsaktiebolag

As early as 1893, the owners of Nora – Karlskoga Järnvägsaktiebolag , Bredsjö – Grängens Järnväg , Striberg – Grängens Järnväg and Vikern – Möckelns Järnväg to merge into one line. This project was approved by the King in November 1893, and the merger was completed on April 20, 1894. This merged the three previously separate routes into a 97-kilometer route between Bredsjö and Degerfors. It now belonged to the Nora – Karlskoga Järnvägsaktiebolag .

After a planned reconstruction in 1905, the newly formed Nora Bergslags Järnvägsaktiebolag bought all of the assets of Nora – Karlskoga Järnvägsaktiebolag .

Current condition

Passenger traffic on the later standard-gauge line was stopped on May 22, 1966. Freight traffic ended on May 3, 1977 when the dam collapsed near Nyhammar south of Bredsjö.

The route between Grängen and Bredsjö was demolished in 1980 by Nora Bergslags Järnvägsaktiebolag . Parts of the embankment are used as paths.
