Hayle ( Cornish : Heyl ) is a small town and a municipality in the former District Penwith the county Cornwall in England and has a cargo port.

The community came into being when it split off from part of the former community of Phillack . In 1935 they reunited with Phillack and in 1937 further areas from the municipality of St Erth were added. Today's Hayle is bordered by St Ives to the west, St Erth to the south, Gwinear-Gwithian to the east and the Bristol Channel to the north .

The city's name comes from the Cornish word heyl , which translates as the mouth of the river. The place is located in the southeastern part of St Ives Bay at the mouth of the Hayle River .

history

The area at the mouth of the Hayle River was already inhabited in the Bronze Age. Today's Hayle was only built during the industrial revolution in the 18th century. Another Iron Age settlement was found on a hill above the river mouth. Trade relations with the Mediterranean could be proven by ceramic finds.

Although the Romans never fully conquered Cornwall, it is believed that the rectangular graveyard of St Uny's Church at Lelant was once a Roman fortress. After the retreat of the Romans there was an influx of Irish missionaries, after whom some places in Cornwall are still named today. A number of inscriptions and stones still bear witness to this. Reports of Saints Samson and Petroc indicate that there was a small port in Hayle as early as the 6th century.

The Domesday Book reports no major settlement in what is now the small town area. The Conardition mansion and the Concerton mansion, which was located near Gwithian , are recorded in the historical land register . In the 13th century, Concerton became the property of the Arundel family . It was sold to the Cornish Copper Company in the early 19th century . Furthermore, several homesteads are said to have been scattered across the country.

The first written mention of a settlement at the mouth of the Hayle comes from the year 1130. There the church of Phillack, which was dedicated to Saint Felec of Cornwall , and the surrounding buildings are called Egloshayle ( Eglos = church; hayle = mouth) .

It wasn't until 1265 that a settlement called Hayle is reported, which was a collection of houses and surrounding homesteads.
