St Just in Penwith (2008)

St Just ( Cornish : Lanust) is a city in the former District Penwith the county Cornwall in England and lies on the Irish Sea . The places Pendeen , Kelynack and Trewellard also belong to it . In the northwest it borders on the municipality of Morvah , in the east on Madron and Sancreed and in the south on the municipalities of St Buryan and Sennen . The urban area has a size of 30.8 km² and is about 13 km west of Penzance along the A3071. St Just is also near Cape Cornwall , a headland that was once considered the westernmost point of England.

St Just has been twinning with Huelgoat in Brittany since 2010 .

St Just was the center of one of the oldest mining regions, the St Just mining district in Cornwall. Due to the many mining operations in the area, the population rose in a short time from 2779 in 1801 to 9290 in 1861. The remnants of earlier and modern mining have a significant impact on the landscape of the area. After the deposits were exhausted or the market price made mining uneconomical, the mines were closed and many residents of the region had to emigrate. The remains of these cultural monuments can be seen everywhere in the region around St Just. Two mines in the immediate area, the Levant Mine , in a working Balancing - steam engine can be visited and equipped with a modern visitor center Geevor Mine have become a visitor attraction.

Some sources say the name St Just derives from the missionary Justus . At the request of Augustine of Canterbury, Pope Gregory the Great sent him to England to proselytize the Saxons. He became both first Bishop of Rochester and Archbishop of Canterbury .
