Justus of Canterbury
Justus (* in Rome ; † November 10 between 627 and 631 ), Roman by birth, was one of the missionaries who were sent to England by Pope Gregory I at the request of Augustine of Canterbury in 601 .
He was named first Bishop of Rochester . When persecution of Christians broke out after the death of King Æthelberht of Kent , he fled to Gaul , but after a year returned to his bishopric, which he ruled with diligence and care until he became Archbishop of Canterbury in 624 by holding the pallium of Pope Boniface V received. At the same time he received the right to ordain bishops. He made Romanus his successor in Rochester.
Justus is known for his writing to British and Irish Christians , i.e. the Celtic Church , in which he urged them to conform to the Roman Church. An extract from this letter has come down to Beda . His language was not very tactful and the letter was largely ignored. The major event of his brief reign was the Northumbrian evangelism . Paulinus was ordained first Bishop of York by Justus , and within two years King Edwin of Northumbria settled with a large number of his subjects in a small church built in York next to what is now York Minster , to baptize. Justus found out about the news shortly before his death.
