The Bristol and South Wales Union Railway was a railway company based in Somerset , England .

The company received on July 27, 1857 the concession to build a railway line from Bristol to the Severn and to set up a ferry service.

In Portskewett on the other side of the Severn there was a connection to the route network of the South Wales Railway . On September 8, 1863, the 2.14 meter broad gauge line was put into operation by the Great Western Railway (GWR). On August 1, 1868, the GWR took over the railway company.

On June 27, 1872, the Great Western began construction of the Severn Tunnel , which, when it was commissioned on January 9, 1886, made ferry traffic unnecessary.
