Brevik

Brevik was a municipality with about 2,700 inhabitants in the south of the province of Telemark (merged into Vestfold og Telemark in 2020 ) in southern Norway . From January 1, 1838, it became independent in the sense of the Formannskapsdistrikt of 1837 and was incorporated into the significantly larger municipality of Porsgrunn, about ten kilometers to the north, on January 1, 1964 .

The place is at the southern end of the peninsula Eidanger (Eidangerhalvøya), which divides a fjord in two. The Old Norse form of the name was Breiðvík, where the first element breiðr means "wide" and the ending vík stands for "inlet".

Brevik is considered to be one of the best preserved towns from the time of the sailing ships and used to be an export center for ice and wood. The last shipment of wood to the United Kingdom was around 1960.

Brevik was the end of the Eidanger – Brevik railway line . The route was opened on October 15, 1895 by King Oscar II . Passenger traffic on the entire route ended in 1968. The train station in Brevik was closed on December 1, 1982. The station building, built in 1917, is a listed building and is used today by the Telemark Museum and the Porsgrunnsmuseene Foundation .

The term “Brevik” hit the German and Norwegian headlines in March 2012 when a shop belonging to the neo-Nazi fashion brand Thor Steinar opened in Chemnitz under the name Brevik , allegedly the name of the city. The reason for the sensation was the similarity with the surname Breivik of the author of the 2011 attacks in Norway . After strong public protests called for the store to be closed, the owners renamed it a week after it opened.
