The railway line Eidanger - Brevik ( Norwegian Brevikbanen ) is a ten kilometer long railway line in Vestfold og Telemark in Norway . It originally led from Eidanger to Brevik .
history
The Eidanger – Brevik railway was built between 1892 and 1895 with a gauge of 1067 mm. The gauge was changed to standard gauge in 1921. The line has been electrified since 1949.
The first passenger traffic on the route took place in the summer of 1895 with trains from Skien to Nystrand, even before the route to Brevik was finished. The trains were called badetoget (bathing train), with which the newly built holiday homes along the Eidangerfjord were opened up. The line was opened by King Oscar II on October 15, 1895. Passenger traffic on the entire line ended in 1968. The train station in Brevik was closed on December 1, 1982. The station building, built in 1917, is a listed building and is used today by the Telemark Museum and the Porsgrunnsmuseene Foundation .
Since then, only freight trains have been running on the route, usually lime trains to the Norcem cement factory in Ørvik. Various locomotives were used for these trains, including the electric locomotives of the types El 8 , El 11 and El 13 . There was always a locomotive running at each end of the train. In recent years only one electric locomotive was used on the side facing Brevik, at the other end in the direction of Porsgrunn a Skd shunting locomotive ran . In 2007 the El 14 and Skd 226 were used, and in the summer of 2008 a Skd 224 was in service .
In 1993, Grenland terminals were built and connected to the line. Traffic on this route was very low and operations were stopped in 2000. In 2009, NorthSea Terminal drove to the terminal with empty container trucks on a trial basis. New imported locomotives were also delivered via this quay.
The last kilometer of the route to the train station in Brevik has been dismantled.
