The NSB El 14 series from Norges Statsbaner (NSB) are electric locomotives that were procured between 1968 and 1973 to move heavy passenger trains on the main railways Sørlandsbanen to Stavanger , Bergensbanen to Bergen and Dovrebanen to Trondheim .

History and technical data

The electrification of the Dovrebane in the late 1960s forced NSB to procure a more powerful universal locomotive than the El 13 . Based on the Ae 6/6 in Switzerland and the El 13 developed in the 1950s, the El 14 series was created .

With a continuous output of 5,080 kW and a pulling force of 350 kN, the El 14 was one of the most powerful locomotives that NSB had in its portfolio. Along with the El 15, this type was the only Norwegian electric locomotive that had three axles per bogie in order not to exceed the permissible axle load .

In 1975 the middle windows of the engine room were welded shut to prevent snow from entering the engine room. From 1981 it was used in freight train service on the Sørlandsbane. The window grilles against stone chipping were replaced by unbreakable glass between 1983 and 1984. It was equipped with the Automatic Train Control (ATC) train control system in 1996.

With the delivery of the more powerful El 18 from 1996, the El 14 were handed over to freight train service and the top speed was reduced from 120 to 100 km / h with effect from January 5, 1997.

accident

On February 22, 1975 the express train 351 from Oslo and the express train 404 from Trondheim collided head-on near Tretten , municipality Øyer , Oppland , on the Oslo – Trondheim railway line. There were 27 dead and 25 injured, the locomotives 14.2183 and 14.2197 were badly damaged. The Tretten railway accident was one of the largest accidents in Norwegian railway history.

NSB Gods El 14

In 1996 the state company Norges Statsbaner became the privatized, but state-owned, limited liability company Norges Statsbaner BA and Jernbaneverket . Jernbaneverket took over the track infrastructure such as lines, rails, signals and switches, NSB BA the passenger traffic. The freight traffic from the old company was continued under the NSB Gods company .

Since some of the locomotives had already been withdrawn from passenger train service by more modern locomotives and were used in freight train traffic, the entire series was handed over to the newly established freight train division NSB Gods in September 1996 . Over the years, the locomotives lost their classic NSB red-brown color scheme and the Nordland locomotives lost their window grilles and were given a new color concept. When the locomotive was repainted, the point between the series number and the current serial number that had been common in Norwegian locomotive lettering disappeared.

In 2002 the limited liability NSB BA was converted into the stock corporation Norges Statsbaner AS . NSB Gods took over NSB BA's express and general cargo transport, which at the same time was converted to CargoNet . While NSB AS kept 55% of the shares in CargoNet, the Swedish company Green Cargo acquired 45% of the shares.

This marked the transition from the locomotive series to the new CargoNet company . The color scheme used by NSB Gods remained unchanged except for the new owner designation.

Whereabouts

Since 2005, some locomotives have not been repaired during major inspections or after accidents, but have been decommissioned. El 14 2175 hit a landslide near Evanger in Vestland in 2005 and was the first locomotive to be scrapped in the same year.

In 2009 El 14 2165 and 2185 followed , then in 2012 El 14 2167 , the 2169 and the 2189 , which were badly damaged by an engine fire in 2010 . 2013 El 14 2164 and 2183 and 2014 El 14 2190 were taken out of service.
