George Meeker (born March 5, 1904 in Brooklyn , New York , † August 19, 1984 in Carpinteria , California ) was an American actor who starred in over 180 films between 1928 and 1951.

life and career

George Meeker began his acting career in the 1920s, so he was seen in several productions on Broadway during this time. He made his film debut in 1928 under the direction of John Ford as the Bavarian shepherd in the film drama Four Sons , a few years later he turned entirely to the film business. He was not picky about roles, he played leading roles a few times, but then only took on appearances for a few seconds in other films. He had smaller appearances in the classic films Gone With the Wind (as a poker-playing captain) and Casablanca (as a player in Rick's Cafe). In his larger roles, Meeker mostly embodied unsympathetic roles, especially as a slipper, liar or hypocrite he was often seen. In love stories he often played the main actor's competitor for the love of a woman, for example in the western Ritt zum Ox-Bow (1943) with Henry Fonda and in the comedy Der Weg nach Rio (1947) with Dorothy Lamour . In many crime films he often appeared as a dodgy suspect, for example he was seen in the 1944 B-movie I Accuse My Parents , which was best known for its involuntarily ridiculous plot. Meeker had a historical role as Maximilien de Robespierre in the lavish MGM biography Marie-Antoinette with Norma Shearer in the title role of the French queen.

In Hollywood, George Meeker was known as an experienced polo player in addition to his film roles . In 1952 he retired from the acting business, although he was a busy actor to the end. He had previously taken on guest roles in two series in the upcoming television series in the early 1950s. Nothing is known about his further life in the following decades until his death. George Meeker died in 1984 at the age of 80 from complications from Alzheimer's disease . He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his film work.
