The Norwegian class El 15 is an electric locomotive series of the Norges Statsbaner (NSB).

It was procured to replace the older El 3 and El 4 on the Luleå – Narvik railway , the ore railway , between Luleå and Narvik . Their main task was the transportation of iron ore trains . With their 420 kN pulling force, the El 15 are the most powerful locomotives that NSB had in their portfolio.

history

The Luleå – Narvik railway was operated from the start by the two state railway companies Norges Statsbaner (Norway) and Statens Järnvägar ( Sweden ). Both companies made locomotives available for operation.

The first electric trains ran from 1915 on the Kiruna - Riksgränsen line and from 1922 on the entire ore line.

The first electric locomotives were the SJ O equipped with coupling rods . The maximum train weight was 1900 t. With the locomotives of the type Dm , the train weight could be increased to 3000 t in the 1950s. In the 1960s, the ore railway was expanded to accommodate a 25-ton axle load and the line to the new mine in Svappavaara was built, which was commissioned in 1968. Four-axle instead of three-axle ore wagons were used on the route and SJ procured the Dm3 , which could transport 5000 t.

The NSB did not have suitable locomotives to move the 5000 t heavy iron ore trains. The project to convert the eight El 12 , paired, independent 1'D locomotives, which were purchased between 1954 and 1957 , so that they could move the trains, was abandoned in favor of a new design.

The El 15 were used from 1967 on the Luleå – Narvik route. For this use they were equipped with an automatic clutch (type SA3).

construction

The construction of the Romanian 060 EA, which is used by Căile Ferate Române (CFR), served as the basis for the new building . This six-axle locomotive was designed by ASEA and built by Electroputere .

The electrical part was manufactured by Allmänna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget (ASEA) (direct current motors), the mechanical part by Thunes mekaniske .

They have a device for multiple control , with which two locomotives can be driven together from one driver's cab. They are also equipped with a resistance brake and a special ore train brake. 590 kW were available for the train heating.

MTAS 91-96

With the restructuring of NSB on July 1, 1996, freight traffic on the ore railway was transferred to LKAB (Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag) , which took over the six locomotives with its Norwegian railway company Malmtrafik AS.

The locomotives were initially painted dark green and later light blue. No. 96 kept the red-brown NSB paint well into the 1990s.

At the end of 2003 the locomotives were parked in Narvik. They have been replaced by the IORE locomotives that have been delivered since 2000 . With 5400 kW, these have the same output as the El 15, but have a higher starting tractive effort of 600 kN.

In 2004 the six El 15s were sold to Hector Rail in Sweden. They are listed there as the 161 series. The locomotives were fully inspected and repainted in Luleå-Notviken, locomotive 105, however, kept the old light blue color, locomotive 102 remained there as a spare parts donor. Hector Rail uses the locomotives in front of freight trains in Sweden and on connections to southern Norway. In 2013, locomotive 103 was parked in Notviken.
