Riksgränsen ( German " Reichs Frontier " ) is a town in the Swedish province of Norrbotten County and the historic province of Lapland . In 1995 the place still had 55 permanent residents. By 2000 this number sank below 50, so that Riksgränsen lost the status of a småort .
location
The place, which is located in the municipality of Kiruna , is located on the Swedish- Norwegian border and is now mainly known as a ski resort. The foundation stone was laid for this in 1902 when the ore railway from Luleå via Kiruna to Narvik for transporting iron ore was completed. Passenger transport connections exist to Narvik in Norway as well as to Swedish soil and Stockholm .
climate
Due to its location in the Scandinavian Mountains , Riksgränsen is exposed to both the maritime influence of the North Atlantic Current and continental air masses from the east. In connection with an altitude of over 500 meters above sea level , the place has a climate that is characterized primarily by very low summer temperatures and extremely long winters. A permanent snow cover can form as early as the beginning of October, and it is not uncommon for it to disappear in June. With an average annual amount of 1005.6 mm, Riksgränsen is one of the wettest places in Sweden. The snow depth can be over two meters in corresponding winters, while extreme temperatures of below −30 ° C, which are otherwise often found in eastern Lapland, are rare in Riksgränsen due to the proximity to the Atlantic. Since only one month reaches an average temperature of over 10 ° C, the climate of Riksgränsen can still be described as sub-arctic or cold-temperate ( effective climate classification : Dfc).
