Sven Hörnell (* 1919 in Järved near Örnsköldsvik , Ångermanland province ; † October 4, 1992 in Riksgränsen ) was a Swedish photographer . Hörnell photographed the Swedish mountain regions for more than 50 years .

Life

When the Second World War broke out in 1939 , he was drafted into the military and assigned to the skier battalion ( Swedish skidlöparbataljonen ) in Boden . Despite the circumstances, he was fascinated by the landscape, the people and the light in the north. That is why he settled in Riksgränsen at the beginning of 1940 .

Many of his pictures and later films of the mountains were made from his airplane , a Piper PA-18 Super Cub acquired in 1965 . In 1967 he made the first landing on the snow-covered Kebnekaise .

His archive contains historical pictures from Sápmi from the 1940s as well as scanned panorama pictures in the size 6 "× 17".

He produced postcards, paintings and books. Hörnell was obsessed with technology and used 21 projectors to show visitors the splendor of the mountains in his studio in Riksgränsen. Sven Hörnell also showed these photographs in numerous slide presentations in the region, including for vacationers in Björkliden .

He published these photographs in several illustrated books .

In October 1992 Sven Hörnell died on his usual morning walk between Katterjåkk and Riksgränsen.

His daughter Gudrun Hörnell has owned a shop in Kiruna Folkets Hus since 2005 , where Sven Hörnell's books can be purchased.
