The SJ Dm series from Statens Järnvägar (SJ) are electric locomotives for use in front of ore trains on the ore railway between Narvik and Luleå . They were procured in several series between 1953 and 1971. They could pull trains up to 3400 tons.

Two copies were taken over by MTAB ( MTAB Malmtrafik i Kiruna AB ) in 1996 .

history

The double locomotives , each consisting of two SJ Dm (I) , were derived from the Da series ( wheel arrangement 1'C1 '). Each part of the locomotive has its own number; the two halves could only be separated in the workshop.

technology

Each of the two Lokteile has four coupled drive axles and in the center a blind shaft which is driven by two electric motors. A running axle is only available at the outer ends of the locomotive. Each half of the locomotive has a driver's cab and a pantograph .

SJ Dm (I)

Originally each part of the locomotive was equipped with two KJC engines with 920 kW each, so that the double locomotives had four engines of this power. In order to increase the pulling power of the double locomotives, the locomotive parts were retrofitted with KJD engines with 1,035 kW each from around 1962. As a rule, two locomotive halves with the following numbers always formed a double locomotive (example: Dm 834 + Dm 835 ; Dm 836 + Dm 837 etc.).

Until around 1980, the double locomotives from the Kiruna depot were in use together with the three-part SJ Dm3 on the ore line. Due to the increasing train weights, they no longer met the requirements there and were passed on further south to the Ånge and Gävle depots, from where they were still in use in lighter freight traffic for a few years.

In 1991/92 the locomotives except for Dm 974 + Dm 975 , Dm 985 + Dm 986 and the already rebuilt series Dm 1201-1230 were parked and decommissioned. The Dm 1249 + Dm 1250 only delivered in 1971 derailed at Katterat in 1992 and were then also scrapped.

Dm 946 + Dm 947 were given to the FMJ Museum in Finspång in 1992 . In 1997 they came back to the SJ in Notviken . It was scrapped there in 1998.

SJ Dm (II)

Since the train weights had already increased considerably at the end of the 1950s, the construction of a three-part locomotive was planned in addition to retrofitting with more powerful engines. For this reason, six locomotives from the series built in 1960 were equipped with the necessary technical equipment for the installation of a central section without a driver's cab, and these were assigned to the Dm (II) series .

For this purpose, three middle parts Dm3 977 , Dm3 980 and Dm3 983 without driver's cab were built and formed with the six locomotive parts into three three-part locomotives with the sequence Dm (II) + Dm3 + Dm (II) and with consecutive numbering. The official designation of the triple locomotives is Dm + Dm3 + Dm , whereby they were called Dm3 for short .

After the three-part locomotives proved themselves in service, 16 additional middle parts with the company numbers Dm 1231–1246 were procured between 1967 and 1970 .

All locomotive halves from the Dm 1201–1230 series were converted in the same period for the installation of this middle section and also assigned to the Dm (II) series . After assembly, they were then used as three-part units.

MTAB Dm2

With the handover of all ore railway locomotives from Statens Järnvägar to MTAB Malmtrafik i Kiruna AB in 1996 , the two remaining Dm 974 + Dm 975 and Dm 985 + Dm 986 came to MTAB. From this point onwards, these were given the series designation MTAB Dm2 .

Both double locomotives were shut down in 1997, Dm2 985 + Dm2 986 were scrapped in Kiruna in 1999 and Dm2 974 + Dm2 975 in 2004. Thus none of the former two-part Dm has been preserved.

Norwegian El 12

The Norges Statsbaner (NSB) procured four pairs of almost identical locomotives in 1954 and 1957 as the El 12 series . The difference was that the EL-12 pairs were not permanently coupled to each other, but consisted of two independent 1'D locomotives.
