Liz Claiborne

Liz Claiborne (born March 31, 1929 in Brussels , † June 26, 2007 in New York ; full name Anne Elisabeth Jane Claiborne ) was an American fashion designer .

Life

Liz Claiborne came from a long -established Louisiana family, but her American parents were living in Belgium at the time of her birth. In 1939, when Liz was ten years old, the Claibornes returned to New Orleans . She later attended boarding school in Catonsville , Maryland . Before she even finished high school, she went back to Europe to study art. After completing her studies, Claiborne moved back to the United States , where she initially got a job as a draftswoman at the sportswear store Tina Leser. In the New York Fashion District, she worked for various fashion labels for almost two decades until, in 1976, together with her husband and business partner Arthur Ortenberg (1926–2014), she founded her own company in Manhattan, Liz Claiborne Inc.

As a fashion designer, she succeeded in creating a new trend in the 1970s by specially designing fashion for so-called career women who could compete with the suits of their male colleagues. So her trend soon advanced to a successful business idea that brought her company to the top of the women's fashion industry in the USA.

In 1990 she gave up the management of the company she had founded and withdrew into private life. At the end of June 2007 she died of cancer in New York.
