North Norgebanen

Destination of the planned North Norgebane: Tromsø

The Nord-Norgebane (German Northern Norway Railway) is a railway project in the north of Norway . The aim of the planning is to extend the Nordlandsbane , which currently ends in Bodø , from Fauske in Fylke Nordland to Tromsø .

history

The Nordlandsbane to Bodø was opened in 1962. At the time, it was the declared aim of politics to initially extend the railway line from Fauske to Narvik , where it was to meet the ore line that was part of the Swedish railway network . Further construction to Tromsø and a branch line to Harstad were also on the agenda. At the beginning of the 1990s, Storting put corresponding plans on hold.

With the exception of an island route , the Kirkenes – Bjørnevatn railway in Kirkenes and the connection from Narvik to the Swedish railway network, there are no railways in North-Norge north of the Bodø – Fauske line and there is public debate as to whether they are needed. The construction of the 482-kilometer route from Fauske to Tromsø would be very expensive due to the difficult terrain, especially since road and air traffic in the region are now very well developed. On the other hand, arguments for climate protection and the possibility of faster transport of goods, especially fish, are cited as arguments in favor of a rail connection to Northern Norway. There are also plans to extend the route to Russia .

In the course of Tromsø's application to host the 2018 Winter Olympics, a rail connection to Northern Norway was under discussion. The connection from Tromsø to the Swedish ore railway is discussed again and again without creating a direct connection to the Norwegian railway network. A corresponding route could either lead from Narvik or from Torneträsk in Sweden via the towns of Bardu , Setermoen and Nordkjosbotn to Tromsø. There are also proposals to build rail lines from Finland to either Tromsø or Finnmark . On May 26, 2020, the Storting National Parliament voted with 30 for and 56 against a proposal by the two MPs Torgeir Knag Fylkesnes ( SV ) and Per-Willy Amundsen ( FrP ), which included an approximately 375 kilometer extension of the railway line to Tromsø. The estimated cost was NOK 100 billion.

Special

"Tromsø jernbanestation" pub ("Tromsø Railway Station")

During the Second World War , the construction of a railway line from Fauske to Narvik had already begun under German occupation. Some of the tunnels already built in this context are now used by roads.

A pub in Tromsø is called "Tromsø jernbanestasjon" ("Tromsø Railway Station").
