Nordkjosbotn (or Vollan or Gargan ) is a tettsted in the municipality of Balsfjord in Troms og Finnmark in Norway . The place is about 70 kilometers south-southeast from the center of Tromsø . Nordkjosbotn has 470 inhabitants (as of 2019).

The place is called Northern Norway's largest intersection because the European roads E6 and E8 , which form the main access to Tromsø, unite here. In terms of traffic, go straight on the E8 towards Tromsø if you are coming from the south, but you have to turn right to get to the section where the E6 and E8 are bundled up to Skibotn . The postal address is 9040 Nordkjosbotn .

geography

Nordkjosbotn is, as the name suggests, at the tip ( Norwegian botn ) of the Nordkjosen fjord, as the innermost part of the Balsfjord is called. This makes the place the western end of the Balsfjordeidet isthmus . The isthmus at Nordkjosbotn is only a few kilometers wide and mountains that are higher than 1000 m frame the village. Of these, the Berg Store Russetind in the south is particularly worth seeing.

The place itself has an area of 75 hectares and lies partly on swampy floodplain, which has been formed by the migration of the Nordkjoselva river across the valley floor.

Geographical importance

Nordkjosbotn is located on the south side of one of the few winter-safe passages from north Troms to the south. This has recently been one of the main reasons for choosing a place to live in the area. The safe and relatively easy route from Balsfjord to Storfjord made it seem natural to lay the European roads across the isthmus. The passage created the basis for the economy, which has built a regional trading center here. Today, many residents from the area come to Nordkjosbotn to shop.

economy

Nordkjosbotn is a place that is characterized by its economic activity. This is in large part due to the favorable geography of the area. Today you can find two grocery stores, two petrol stations, two restaurants, a bakery, two caravan dealers , a post office, a bank branch, a fitness center ( Norwegian treningssenter ), a packaging factory ( Norwegian eps og emballasjefabrikk ), a campsite, a station of Statens vegvesen and a Mesta customer center. Vollan Gjestestue is worth mentioning , which has been in operation since the war and has served traditional food in beautiful surroundings. Nordkjosbotn's center has been the scene of major construction work for a while, most recently for the construction of a new Coop-Prix shop and an ambulance station ( Norwegian ambulansesentralen på Sjøvollan ). In 2012 Macks Ølbryggerifing built a new factory in Nordkjosbotn, which took over the production from Tromsø.

In addition to the above-mentioned economic activities, agriculture plays a major role in the surrounding area as a livelihood. Agriculture is important in the entire municipality of Balsfjord , making it Northern Norway's largest agricultural municipality and Norway's largest producer of goat's milk.

population

The Norwegian Central Statistical Office ( Norwegian Statistisk sentralbyrå ) states that the place had 381 inhabitants and a population density of 508 E / km² on January 1, 2008. It has been criticized, however, that these figures are based on narrowing down the area. The area Grunnkretsene Nordkjosbotn syd, Nordkjosbotn nord og Bomstad had a total of 692 inhabitants in 2008.

The population consists mainly of the descendants of immigrants from southern Norway and Sweden who settled along the fjord in the 19th century.

The Piggstein ( Piggsteinen )

The so-called Piggstein ( Norwegian Piggsteinen ) is located about 5 km southeast of the town center. It has been a tradition since ancient times to carve one's name on the stone when traveling north or south. More recently this has been supplanted by the use of spray cans as a tool and now there are many thousands of names in a thick layer of paint on the stone.

future

Nordkjosbotn is a growing Tettsted and that leads to optimism in the local population. Many Tromsø companies have started or are planning new activities in Nordkjosbotn and the municipality is actively working to lay the groundwork for these new establishments. However, it cannot be overlooked that the place is heavily dependent on through traffic and any relocation of the roads could affect the future growth of the place. However, from today's perspective, a simple road relocation seems unlikely for the foreseeable future, because most of the routes further north or south would require huge investment sums.
