The Stavne – Leangen (Norw. Stavnebanen ) railway is a 5.8 km long railway line in the Norwegian city of Trondheim . It branches off the Dovrebahn in Stavne on the west side of Trondheim , crosses the Nidelva and the E6 and reaches Lerkendal , the only station on the route. Then it leads through the 2.7 km long Tyholt tunnel to Leangen , where it meets the Meråkerbane towards Hell . The route is not electrified.

history

Stavnebanen from the Tyholttunnelen towards Leangen

At the request of the German Wehrmacht, Stavnebanen was built as an alternative route outside the center of Trondheim during World War II , in order to have an alternative route in the event of sabotage. Because the tunnel construction took a long time, a parallel line was built from Skansen train station through Sandgata. When the war ended, neither section was completed. The route from Sandgate and further through Olav Tryggvasons gate only reached to Søndre gate.

Further construction was postponed for a long time, the line was only put into operation on June 2, 1957. At first it was only used for freight transport. Since 1988 local trains from Steinkjer , which leave the Dovrebahn in Marienborg, have been running daily on the route to Lerkendal. Only freight trains continue to run through the Tyholttunnelen.

Diesel multiple units of the NSB 92 series (2012) from Norges Statsbaner are used for local trains . The trains run every hour, depending on the volume of traffic, one to two hours.
