Hamar – Grundsetbanen (HGB) was one of the three Norwegian railway lines , the construction of which was decided by Storting on September 3, 1857, together with the Kongsvingerbanen and Trondhjem – Størenbanen as Norway's first state railways .
history
The decision to build the line was made in 1857, however, only for the Hamar - Elverum section and its terminus on the east bank of the Glomma . On October 7, 1859, however, parliament decided to change the route. Instead of crossing the river, the route continued along the western bank to Grundset , about six miles north of Elverum. The connection was built as a narrow-gauge railway in the 1067 mm gauge, the CAP gauge , developed by Carl Abraham Pihl , who was involved in the construction, and opened on June 23, 1862.
The line was the second railway line on the territory of today's Norway, at the same time it was the first state railway line.
Grundsetbanen is the southernmost part of the Rørosbane . The basic set Aamotbane was built as early as 1871 . The tasks of the station in the basic set were then moved to the new terminus in Rena .
The entire Rørosbane, to which the Grundetbane belongs today, was officially opened on October 13, 1877.
Re-gauging the Rørosbane
With the commissioning of the Solørbane in 1913 with the standard gauge section between Kongsvinger and Elverum, the problem arose of reloading the freight in the future or converting the subsequent route to standard gauge as well. In 1917 a third rail was installed. This meant that both narrow-gauge and standard-gauge trains could run. This interim operation between Rena and Elverum began on November 16, 1917 and between Elverum and Hamar on November 29, 1917. This mixed operation between Elverum and Hamar ended on September 8, 1931, and between Elverum and Koppang it was discontinued on October 7. From this point on, only standard gauge trains operated and the third rail was dismantled.

When the Grundsetbane was opened, three locomotives, five passenger cars and 50 freight cars were assigned to this route.
