Rena was originally a train station , which was built in connection with the Rørosbane in 1871 .

Towards the end of the 19th century, the area's infrastructure was improved. Many roads and bridges over the Glomma were completed for car traffic in 1890 thanks to Tollef Kilde . In the same year plans for the construction of a church were initiated by the mayor of the municipality.

The Åmot Church from 1902 is in the center and is the most famous tourist attraction in the town. The church is a wooden church designed by the architect Henrik Bull .

In 1913 the Rena carton factory was founded by Tollef Kilde. In 1998 it was shut down.

During the Second World War (1940) the settlement was bombed by the German air force , as the Germans believed that King Håkon , Crown Prince Olav and the government were staying here. The bombs destroyed the cardboard factory and the station building, among other things.
