The Telemark Battalion ( tmbn ; Norwegian Telemark Bataljon ) is an infantry - battalion of the brigade north of the Norwegian Armed Forces . The battalion is stationed in Rena ( Åmot municipality , Fylke Innlandet ) and consists of five companies . It consists of a tank company (mainly Leopard 2 ), a reconnaissance company ( CV9030 , ATVs and various reconnaissance equipment , including UAVs etc.), two mechanized infantry companies and a supply and reserve unit. The battalion is a special unit in which no basic military service members serve. It was founded by the Norwegian armed forces as a rapid reaction force, especially for direct missions abroad.

history

The unit was set up in 1993 as motorized infantry in connection with the Immediate Reaction Force in Heistadmoen , which was brought into being by a resolution of June 18, 1993 of the Storting (Norwegian Parliament). After the operations in Bosnia it was decided to redesign the battalion and from July 1, 2003 the new unit was operational. From 1993 to 1996 the battalion was assigned to the brigade in Northern Norway ( Brigaden i Nord-Norge ), which was established from the former Tysklandsbrigaden (1947 to 1953). Since 1996 the Telemark Battalion belongs to the newly created Brigade Nord . The Telemark Battalion suffered the first casualty of the Norwegian ISAF mission on May 23, 2004, when grenadier Tommy Rødningsby was killed in action.

In the summer of 2009, the battalion attracted more attention when it became known that its officers had issued orders to their soldiers that the houses of alleged insurgents, Taliban and their supporters in Afghanistan with a red skull graffiti in the style of the Punisher - Comics too. After lengthy public discussions and after the newspaper Verdens Gang reported in September 2010 that some soldiers in the battalion were still using the Punisher skull in Afghanistan, the Norwegian military leadership finally prohibited this.

In 2010, another soldier in the battalion was killed while on duty in Afghanistan. In 2010, the Dagbladet reported on a video of the company commander Rune Solberg of the Telemark Battalion with a battle cry based on the Vikings in action against the Taliban: Til Valhall , in German: To Walhalla . The Norwegian journalist Dag Herbjørnsrud published an interview with the Norwegian Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik in an editorial in 2011 , where he stated in connection with this, "that we do not need soldiers with horned helmets and battle cries, only professionals to keep peace".
