history

Maimana's roots go back to ancient times. There is no doubt that Maimana Castle can be dated back to the Early Iron Age . Ceramic shards from the Paleolithic and Bronze Ages have been found in the nearby cave of Bilchiragh .

In the 10th century Maimana was the residence of Malik of Guzganan , then under the rule of the Farighuniden - dynasty .

In the 16th century, Maimana came under Uzbek influence after the conquest of Turkistan and Herat by Mohammed Scheibani .

At the beginning of the 18th century, the Bukhara Khanate ruled the city, but lost power and the locally ruling Ming Amirs became more visible from 1707 onwards. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Maimana was the center of an independent Uzbek khanate and an important trading center on the route from Turkistan to Herat and Persia .

In 1876 the city fell to Afghanistan and was largely destroyed, only 10 percent of the population survived. For centuries the city was surrounded by strong city walls and watchtowers, after the destruction only a pile of rubble was left.

In 1934 the reconstruction of the city began, in 1949 the western part of the old city was renewed and the old castle was turned into a park.

In Maimana there is a Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) of the ISAF under the direction of the Norwegian armed forces . The PRT also includes members of the Latvian Armed Forces .
