Bodinayakkanur ( Tamil : போதிநாயக்கனூர் Pōtināyakkaṉūr [ ˈboːd̪iˌnaːjʌkːənuːr ], also Bodinayakanur, Bodi for short ) is a city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu with around 76,000 inhabitants (2011 census).

Bodinayakkanur is located in the Theni district in southwest Tamil Nadu, 93 kilometers west of Madurai and 16 kilometers west of the district capital Theni near the border with the neighboring state of Kerala . The city lies in the Kambam valley and is surrounded on two sides by mountains: in the west the main ridge of the Western Ghats forms the natural border with Kerala, in the north the Palani Mountains rise up , a branch of the Western Ghats. Bodinayakkanur is the capital of the taluk of the same name (sub-district) in the Theni district.

Bodinayakkanur is a trading center where the yields of the cardamom plantations in the surrounding mountains are handled. The national highway NH 49 runs through the city and crosses the Western Ghats from Rameswaram via Madurai and leads to Kochi in Kerala. In addition, Bodinayakkanur is the end point of the Madurai – Bodinayakkanur railway line . In early 2011 the railway traffic was discontinued, by the distance from meter gauge to the Indian broad gauge switch.

During the Vijayanagar and Nayak times (14th to 18th centuries) Bodinayakkanur was the seat of a feudal estate that belonged to a vassal ( poligar ) of the Nayaks of Madurai . The local Poligar dynasty is said to have immigrated from Gooty in 1336 . After Bodinayakkanur was briefly under the control of Mysores and Travancores at the end of the 18th century , it came under British rule in 1801 . The Poligars of Bodinayakkanur were used by the British as zamindars (landowners). After Indian independence in 1947, the Zamindari system was abolished.

93 percent of the residents of Bodinayakkanur are Hindus , 6 percent Muslim and 1 percent Christian . As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 96 percent of the population as their mother tongue.
