The Madurai – Bodinayakkanur railway is located in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu . It connects the metropolis of Madurai , a railway junction, with Bodinayakkanur on the border with the state of Kerala . Operators are the state-owned Indian railways .
The line was built from 1926 to 1928 by the South Indian Railway Company in meter gauge. On December 31, 2010 the traffic was stopped to convert the line to the Indian broad gauge of 1676 mm.
For passenger and freight traffic, a pair of trains last ran a day that took 3 hours and 40 minutes in each direction. The main load in freight transport was green cardamom from Bodinayakkanur.
