The Ljusdal – Hudiksvall railway line , known colloquially as Dellenbanan , was opened in several sections as a narrow-gauge line with a gauge of 1217 mm in the Swedish province of Gävleborgs län through the Hudiksvalls Järnväg (HJ) between Hudiksvall and Näsviken . After the state bought the line, it was continuously converted to the normal track width of 1435 mm, which is common in Sweden , and operated by Statens Järnvägar from 1888 .

history

In 1860 the section between Hudiksvall and Forsa was opened by the Hudiksvalls Järnväg (HJ). The line had the track width of 1217 mm and was at that time the northernmost railway line in the world. Freight traffic was extensive and therefore the line was extended to Näsviken in 1872.

At the beginning of the 1880s the Norra stambana was opened to Ljusdal. The state recognized that the Hitler Youth route could connect Ljusdal to Hudiksvall. In 1887 the line was bought and re-gauged to standard gauge. However, the state of construction was poor and so a large part of the route was relocated and straightened. After the extension from Ljusdal to Näsviken, the entire Ljusdal – Hudiksvall line was opened in 1888.

In 1924 the Ostkustbana reached Hudiksvall. On May 31, 1959, the line was electrified. From this point on, electric rail buses of the X16 / X17 series were used.

Statens Järnväger wanted to stop passenger traffic as early as 1969, but this was rejected. On January 13, 1985 passenger traffic and on November 1, 1986 freight traffic between Delsbo and Hudiksvall ceased. On October 1, 1989, the Ljusdal – Delsbo section and the formal setting for the entire route followed.

On November 10, 1996, a switch connection about five kilometers after the Ljusdal train station between Dellenbanen and Norra stambanan was put into operation in order to be able to operate the section on two tracks.

Current condition

Today, the Järnvägsföreningen Dellenbanans Vänner association rents out trolleys to tourists on the route and offers museum transport with the historic Y8 1132 rail bus on the Delsbo – Fredriksfors section a few days a year . The tracks are almost completely preserved, even if some of them have been considerably overgrown. At both ends of the line, the switches to the respective main line have been removed so that no tourist draisines run into the lines that are in operation. Most of the overhead line still exists, but has been without power since it was shut down.

future

In addition to the museum and draisine operation, the Museum Railway Association is also committed to restarting the Dellenbahn for regular train operations. In 2008, on the initiative of the association, the interruption of the route for the new construction of the E 4 motorway southwest of Hudiksvall was prevented.
