The name Norra stambanan ( German  The northern trunk line ) was used over time for various railway lines in Sweden .

Original Norra stambanan

Norra stambanan originally referred to the state railway line Stockholm - Uppsala - Krylbo - Storvik . This was part of the network of standard-gauge trunk lines to be built by the state by the Swedish Reichstag in 1854 . Construction of the line began in 1871. On September 6, 1875, the line to Storvik was opened.

Stambanan genome Norrland

According to the original parliamentary decision of 1854, the Norra stambanan should end in Storvik. During the planning work, however, various alternatives for an extension in a northerly direction were investigated under the name Stambanan genom Norrland . In 1873, the Reichstag decided to build a standard gauge extension and laid the route initially to Ljusdal via Ockelbo , Bollnäs and Järvsö , so that construction work from Storvik could begin before the official opening of the original Norra stambana in January 1875. In 1877, the route north of Ljusdal was finally determined so that the entire route to Ånge could be opened on September 16, 1881.

New route name

In 1990, the then railway authority Banverket redefined the names of most of the Swedish railway lines. The route, which has since been referred to as Norra stambanan , consists of the former Stambanan genom Norrland and the formerly private railway line Gävle – Ockelbo . The section south of Storvik was added to other routes. This current course is shown in the route tape.
