Railway line Stockholm – Sundsvall to Gävle

The Kilafors – Söderhamn – Stugsund – Åänge railway is a standard-gauge railway in Sweden . The two parts of today's railway line were built more than half a century apart.

prehistory

The coastal town of Söderhamn experienced an economic boom thanks to the timber industry in the mid-19th century . A continuous rail connection to the Swedish rail network did not take place until 1926 with the Ostkustbanan .

However, the rails reached the city as early as 1861. At that time, the Söderhamn – Bergvik railway with a gauge of 1271 mm was put into operation. Like the Hudiksvall – Forsa line, which was opened a year earlier with the same gauge, it was an island operation . The route was part of the connection to Bollnäs , the Söderhamn – Bollnäs communications trail . People and goods were transported by steamboat between Bollnäs and Bergvik, with a two-kilometer horse-drawn tramway with 891 mm gauge that was used to bypass the rapids of the Ljusnan near Landa. A museum train - the Landabanan - with a gauge of 600 mm runs on part of the former horse-drawn tram .

When the Norra stambanan reached Bollnäs in 1878, a connecting line from Kilafors to Kilafors nedre was built. This shortened the route and only the lake Bergviken between Bergvik and Kilafors nedre had to be crossed by ship.

State railway Kilafors – Söderhamn – Stugsund

In 1885, SJ took over the narrow-gauge Söderhamn – Bergvik railway and converted it into a standard-gauge line between Kilafors and Söderhamn. The section between Kilafors and Bergvik was opened at the end of 1885. The old planum was used between Bergvik and Söderhamn. In addition, the line was extended by four kilometers to the port in Stugsund. The entire route was opened in May 1886.

East Coast Railway

After the Ostkustbana (OKB) bought the section between Söderhamn station and Stugsund in 1916, the line was only continued on December 2, 1923. At that time, the Ostkustbana opened the section between Stugsund and Ljusne. Here Ljusneverken was a siding opened up in Sandarne created a further connection to the Marma Sandarne Järnväg (MaSJ).

SJ took over the management of the section, which was separated from the rest of the OKB network, and it was only three years later when the entire Härnösand - Gävle line was opened , the operation was transferred to the owner company. The SJ and OKB trains ran in parallel between what was then Söderhamn västra and Stugsund - both companies had their own tracks.

State railway Kilafors – Söderhamn – Stugsund – Åänge

Due to increasing losses, the SJ took over the East Coast Railway on August 1, 1933 - so the entire line was owned by the SJ.

In 1953 the Kilafors – Söderhamn section was converted to electrical operation together with the Söderhamn – Gävle line. In 1971 passenger traffic on the Kilafors – Söderhamn section was discontinued. Freight traffic on the section was very low, but it served as a relief and diversion route between Norra Stambanan and Ostkustbanan (Sundsvall – Gävle).

In the summer of 1997 the new Ostkustbanan line was put into operation, which leads past Söderhamn. Since then, the Kilafors line has flowed into the newly constructed Söderhamns västra station. The old line was partially dismantled as far as Stugsund. However, there are still traces of track between the former Söderhamn västra station via Söderhamn to the former depot that no longer have any connection to the rest of the network.

Between Kilafors and Söderhamns Västra there was previously only single wagon traffic on the Marmaverken – Söderhamn section. Only single wagons are transported on the Stugsund – Åänge section of the route. The operation is carried out by Green Cargo with diesel locomotives of the T44 series .

Future prospects

Kilafors – Söderhamn

After the completion of the new Botniabanan Västeraspby – Umeå and the renovation of the Ådalsbanan Sundsvall – Västeraspby, freight traffic on the East Coast Railway will continue to increase. The section between Söderhamn and Gävle is also occupied by high-speed passenger traffic. With a view to relieving the traffic on the routes south of Söderhamn in the future, the Kilafors – Marmaverken section of the route, which has been without scheduled train traffic for several years, has been expanded. To this end, the route will be completely renewed, the former Mobodarne station will be expanded into a modern crossing station, several level crossings will be closed and a direct connection will be built in Söderhamn bypassing the station in a northerly direction to Sundsvall. By 2011, SEK 650 million should be invested in order to be able to run around 20 freight trains a day in both directions in the future. The Kilafors – Marmaverken section was due to reopen in November 2016. This date has been postponed to December 2018 [obsolete] . The reconstruction of the Marmaverken – Söderhamn section is planned for the future.

Stugsund – Sandarne

In October 2013, Trafikverket proposed to stop the maintenance of the line between Stugsund and Sandarne. After the authorities approved, the entertainment was suspended from December 2014. This means that the route will continue to exist for three years without being allowed to be used. After these three years, if there is no longer any need, the section will be closed for good.
