Location and traffic

Sandarne belongs to the municipality of Söderhamn and within this since January 1, 2016 to the district of Sandarne. With almost 1700 inhabitants (2015), the place is the second largest town in the municipality. It is located about 65 km as the crow flies north of the provincial capital Gävle and 7 km southeast of Söderhamn on the south side of the Söderhamnsfjärden bay of the Bottensee .

The place is on the secondary provincial road X 583, which follows the coast, via which the new route of the European route 4 , which runs to the west and which was built as an expressway in the 1990s , can be reached at Söderhamn or via the neighboring town of Ljusne to the south . The X 583 corresponds to the earlier course of the European route.

Söderhamn also the closest passenger station is Söderhamn Västra on a 1997 opened new section of the East Coast Railway (Ostkustbanan), the Stockholm to Sundsvall connects. Before that, the route ran through Sandarne since its opening (in Sandarne in 1923, continuously in 1926). The section of the old line from Åänge to Sandarne is only used by freight traffic, further in the direction of Söderhamn the line to Stugsund station (in the eastern part of Söderhamn) has been out of service since 2014 and will be dismantled later.

The first railway line in Sandarne was the Marma – Sandarne Järnväg , which opened in 1858 and connected the Sandarne harbor with the Askesta sawmill 9 km to the west on the Ljusnan river and Marmen lake . The route was an island operation until the Ostkustbanan was built; In 1924 the passenger traffic and in 1933 the public goods traffic was stopped, in 1970 a large part of the route was closed.

Immediately west of Sandarne is Söderhamn Airport (also Helsinge Airport, IATA code SOO, ICAO code ESNY ), which was opened in 1945 and closed for regular flight operations in November 2011. Until 1998, the squadron F 15 Söderhamn (Hälsinge flygflottilj) of the Swedish Air Force was stationed there.

history

Sandarne belonged already at its founding in 1620 to the territory of the city of Söderhamn, in the same municipality in 1971 (kommun) came up. The initially small town gained economic importance in the 19th century with the construction of a railway line and a port for shipping mainly wood. A sawmill was later built in the vicinity of the port, and a chemical plant around 1920. This originally belonged to the local Bergvik och Ala AB, since 1988 after several changes of ownership Arizona Chemical and is still the most important employer today.

At the beginning of the 1930s there were strikes and riots in Sandarne, as in many northern Swedish coastal towns, during the course of which three workers were shot by the police on July 9, 1932 (so-called Skotten i Sandarne, "Shots from Sandarne", based on the name) of the Ådalen shots ).

In 2015 the northern district of Åsbacka was spun off as an independent crime scene.
