Söderhamn is a city in the Swedish province of Gävleborgs län and the historic province of Hälsingland .
It is located about 75 km north of Gävle at the mouth of the Söderhamnsån river in the Gulf of Bothnia and is the capital of the municipality of the same name .
history
The settlement began as a fishing port at the mouth of the Söderhamnsån River and grew after the establishment of an armory and several sawmills . The town was granted city rights in 1620 . After some devastating city fires, the place was rebuilt with parallel streets.
economy
The city's economy in the late 20th century was shaped by the Ericsson concern and a unit of the Swedish Air Force . After both institutions left the city, the Swedish government tried to compensate by moving the Swedish patent and registration authority here.
An industrial park has been under construction on the former site of Ericsson AB since 2005, which is intended to offer young, innovative companies from all over Sweden an optimal basis. It emphasizes tax advantages compared to the metropolitan areas as well as very good transport links in north and south directions.
The largest employers can be found with the companies Arizona Chemical and Svenska Mineral in the southeastern part of the municipality Sandarne and in the shopping park E-Center as the largest shopping center in Hälsingland, with numerous trading companies located directly on Europastraße 4 .
