Rod AA Zimmer (born December 19, 1942 in Kuroki , died June 7, 2016 in Ottawa ) was a Canadian manager and politician with the Liberal Party of Canada . From 2005 to 2013 he was a member of the state's Senate .

youth

Zimmer's parents' home was in a small hamlet in Saskatchewan Province , about 230 kilometers east of Saskatoon . His father, Joseph Zimmer, was an active member of the Liberal Party. It was Paul Martin Senior pledged in 1968 in the event of a successful candidacy for the party chairmanship and the related appointment as Prime Minister of Canada a seat in the Canadian Senate. However, as Pierre Trudeau surprisingly won the election, this remained an unfulfilled promise. It shaped the young Rod deeply and became the driving force behind him to achieve such an office himself.

Professional background

After studying commercial science at the University of Saskatchewan , which he graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1973 , he began his career in politics in 1968 as assistant to the Saskatchewan Minister of Social Affairs, Cyril MacDonald, and from 1971 as an employee of the Canadian Minister for Utilities and Services and later Secretary of Defense , James Richardson . Then moved to rooms in the economy : He was from 1979 to 1983 of the Corporate Communications Vice-President of CanWest Capital Corporation, the former holding company for Izzy Aspers currently under construction CanWest empire , and from 1985 in charge until 1993 for marketing and communication board member of state Lottery company Manitobas . In addition, Zimmer was a member of the Board of Directors of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers from 1981 to 1993 and President of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet from 1989 to 1991 .

Member of the Senate

Zimmer remained connected to politics and his party, and he was considered an extremely talented fundraiser for the Liberals. His commitment to the election of Paul Martin Junior as party chairman in 2003 thanked him, after his appointment as Prime Minister of Canada , with the nomination for one of the two Senate posts due to the province of Manitoba. Zimmer took up this position in August 2005.

Zimmer had been struggling with health problems since the early 2000s. An esophageal cancer and multiple lung infections caused him to create and prevented a more active role in the Senate. After eight years and one day in office, he therefore gave up his seat for health reasons in August 2013.

As part of an audit in 2015, a total of thirty senators found unjustified expenses in their accounts. Of all these, Zimmer was the highest at C $ 176,000 . The background was in particular that he received grants for a second residence in Ottawa, since he had specified Winnipeg as the first residence, although he was mainly in the capital during the two-year review period. Zimmer denied the allegations and also refused to participate in an offered arbitration , which is why the Canadian federal police opened an investigation. He let a deadline for repayment or commencement of negotiations until April 2016, offered to all affected senators, pass unused.

After falling down, Zimmer was hospitalized in February 2016. While he was still in rehabilitation , he died on the morning of June 7, 2016 at the age of 73 in Saint Vincent Hospital in Ottawa.

Private

In August 2011 Zimmer married the 46 years younger student and young actress Maygan Sensenberger. Due to the great age difference, the connection aroused a certain astonishment, and it hit the headlines far beyond the borders of Canada in August 2012: Sensenberger had threatened her husband so severely during a flight from Ottawa to Saskatoon that she was imprisoned after landing was taken. In two other incidents in 2014 and 2015, she again came into conflict with the judiciary for violent behavior. The couple later separated but remained married.
