Life

After attending school joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served during World War II aboard a submarine - reconnaissance aircraft over Labrador and Iceland and most recently since 1943 even pilot with over 1,000 flying hours. He has received several awards for his military services and received the War Medal 1939–1945 , the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal , the 1939–1945 Star and the Atlantic Star .

After the war, Richardson graduated from Queen's University in Kingston and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He then worked as an entrepreneur in the family business Richardson International, a company in the food sector, and most recently as Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

He began his political career as a candidate for the Liberal Party when he was first elected as a member of the House of Commons in the election of June 25, 1968 , where he represented the constituency of Winnipeg South until May 22, 1979 , with the Liberal Party in June 1978 left and remained as a non-party in the lower house.

In July 1968 he was appointed by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau as a minister without portfolio to the 20th federal cabinet formed by the latter , and at the same time he was acting minister of transport for a few days between April and May 1969. After a cabinet reshuffle, Richardson was Minister for Utilities and Services from May 1969 to November 1972 and then Minister for National Defense . On October 12, 1976, he resigned from this ministerial office because of the anchoring of language rights in the Constitution of Canada and because of fundamental differences of opinion in the official language policy of the government. The language dispute ultimately also led to his resignation from the Liberal Party and a non-party member of parliament until the end of the legislative period.

His attempt to create a new political force with the One Canada Party failed, so he withdrew from political life and concentrated on his business activities.

His older sister, Agnes Benidickson , who was Chancellor of Queen's University at Kingston from 1980 to 1996 , was married to William Moore Benidickson , who was also a member of the House of Commons and Minister and also served in the Senate for twenty years .

In honor of his father who was the airport of Winnipeg in December 2006 in Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport renamed.
