Bollnäs is a town in the Swedish province of Gävleborgs län and the historic province of Hälsingland . It is located 30 kilometers west of Söderhamn on the Ljusnan River and is the capital of the municipality of the same name . Bollnäs is on the main railway line Stockholm - Ånge ( Norra stambanan ) .

history

Finds show that the area was already settled during the Stone Age . Settlement remnants from the Iron Age prove the continued use of this patch of land, which continued in medieval settlement forms. In 1851 the merchant Georg Henric Collini bought Bro gård , which is located in what is now Brotorget town center . In a few years he was able to develop the settlement into an important trading center, benefiting from steam shipping. He is considered to be the founder of the city. The Collinigatan street in the city center reminds of him today.

In the 1870s shipping was supplanted by the railroad. The city became a rail hub on the main Stockholm - Ånge line ( Norra stambanan ) . Important railway workshops such as B. the main workshop for locomotives was established in Bollnäs. In 1888 Bollnäs became a municipality, which was elevated to a market town in 1906. The large cross church (Bollnäs kyrka) from the 18th century has its origins in the first half of the 14th century. The oldest evidence, however, tells of a wooden church from the 12th century on the same site.

The current church contains u. a. a 3.5 m high altar shrine made in Germany at the beginning of the 16th century with the famous Bollnäs Madonna carved by Haaken Gulleson . The church has one of the best preserved collections of medieval wooden sculptures in Sweden.

Fighting

Next to the church with its surrounding cemetery is the Museumshof Kämpens, a small farmstead from the 17th century in its original state. The buildings are all made of raw wood and look inhabited with all their museum inventory. Outside the opening times, visitors have the opportunity to listen to a multilingual tape on the history of fighting at the push of a button. The homestead is to be regarded as a counterpart to the museum village in Rengsjö , 10 km east.
