Swell:

The Orsa – Bollnäs railway in central Sweden was built from 1898 by Dala-Helsinglands Järnvägsaktiebolag . Today the traffic between Bollnäs and Furudal has been stopped, the other section Orsa –Furudal is used by Inlandsbanan AB for sporadic journeys.

history

Opening and operation

On October 11, 1895, the concession for the construction of a railway line between Bollnäs and Orsa and the branch line Göringen-Dalfors was granted, which was taken over a year later by Dala-Helsinglands Järnvägsaktiebolag (DHdJ). On November 4, 1899, the DHdJ started operations and the first trains ran between Bollnäs and Edsbyn . On January 18, 1900, the provisional passenger and freight traffic between Orsa and Voxna began. The official opening date of the railway line and the start of continuous train traffic was August 23, 1902.

The construction costs amounted to 4,640,000 crowns . There was no state participation. As early as 1913, the DHdJ applied for the state to take over the route for reasons of liquidity , but the state did not intervene. So the company went bankrupt in 1915. Dala-Hälsinglands nya järnvägsaktiebolag was founded on February 20, 1917 to continue operations . On May 3, 1917, the railway authority suggested that the state railway should rent the route. The reason given was that it would be advantageous for the state railway to have a connection between the Norra stambana and the Orsa – Kristinehamn line. An agreement was reached on April 3, 1917, and a ten-year tenancy agreement from May 1, 1917 with a rent of 130,000 crowns annually. During the rental period, the maintenance work on the route and facilities was the responsibility of the state.

On May 1, 1927, the Swedish state bought the route at a price of 1,500,000 crowns. The Swedish railway company Statens Järnvägar (SJ) was now responsible , which applied the tariff of the state railways from January 1, 1928.

Current condition

The Swedish State Railways SJ ceased passenger traffic on the entire route on September 1, 1971, and freight traffic between the Edsbyn and Furudal stations followed on May 27, 1972. Afterwards, only hand drawn trolleys for tourists ran on this section of the route. Since 2002 the Edsbyn – Furudal line has been closed to all rail traffic due to the poor track position. The freight traffic from Mora via Orsa to Furudal was provided from 1991 to 1996 by the Dalatåg railway company founded for this purpose , then by BK Tåg AB, which went bankrupt in 2005. In 2004 the timber traffic between Bollnäs and Edsbyn ended, so that this route is now without any traffic.

However, the entire route still exists - with a few exceptions at Voxna and Göringen, where road crossings are already tarred. The section between the property line at Furudal and Bollnäs has not been closed and is recorded in the current SJ documents with the note “Underhåll har upphört” (maintenance suspended). The association Dala – Hälsinglands Järnväg (DHdJ) is trying to resume timber traffic between Orsa and Bollnäs. This means that the route could be used for special trips, for example with the museum railcar. Inlandsbanan AB's current development plan provides for the entire route to be taken over.

On September 7, 2013, a five-year contract was concluded between Trafikverket and the DHdJ association to clear the railway line. According to their own statements, the cut between Furudal and Göringen has top priority in 2014. In an official announcement from June 16, 2015, Trafikverket announced that the maintenance of the Bollnäs – Edybyn – Furudal railway line will be discontinued on December 13, 2015. A possible decision to finally give up the railway line can be made in three years, depending on the legal situation. The DHdJ association publishes photos on its website showing the railway line from the railway bridge near Finnshögst. The tracks have now been largely cut free again. Inlandsbanan AB also gave the association the MD 13107 motor trolley, which had previously been stationed in Sveg , to simplify the cutting work.

The historic Y7 railcar of the Inlandsbahn runs between Orsa and Furudal on special occasions such as the Orsayran music festival . In 2017, it was used as planned on Wednesdays from July 5th to August 2nd. These trips were organized by the Orsa Jernvägsförening association.

Göringen – Dalfors railway line

The railway line between Bollnäs and Orsa was supposed to connect the old industrial community of Dalfors . However, the terrain was too unfavorable for a direct connection. Therefore, the main line led a little further to the northwest and Dalfors was connected via a three-kilometer branch line. This branched off in the small town of Göringen. The opening train ran on November 12, 1902. In 1960 operations were stopped and the tracks were then dismantled.

Göringen train station

The original name of the station was "Dalfors", but it was renamed Göringen in 1901. The first station building in Göringen was an exhibition pavilion that stood at the 1901 trade fair in Gävle. It was bought by the railway company and in its new function it became a station building with a cafeteria. In 1919 a real station building was erected. It was designed by the then chief architect of the SJ, Folke Zettervall, and corresponded to the SJ standard. He had designed a number of station models that could be expanded according to standard drawings depending on the volume of traffic. Göringen was a model of the second expansion stage . The same buildings stood on the dismantled Sveg – Hede railway line .

The station building consisted of two rooms, a waiting room for passengers and an office room for the staff. It has exits on either side and a small bay window towards the railroad tracks. In the 1940s the station was modernized. The wall between the waiting room and the expedition was moved so that the waiting room became smaller. In 1954 the house was connected to the power supply and in 1956 a toilet was installed in the waiting room.

On the old Dalforsbangården ( German  Dalforsbahnhof ) a terminal was built for the handling of logs between trucks and trains. The station in Göringen was manned by staff until 1969. After that it became an unoccupied station. The timber loading in Göringen ended in 1970 and in the following year the last regular passenger train ran between Bollnäs and Orsa. Demand goods traffic existed for another year. The station building fell into disrepair. The move of the building to a railway museum was planned in the 1980s, but was never carried out. Instead, in 1998 Dala – Hälsinglands Järnväg (DHdJ) acquired both the station building and a large part of the station grounds. After extensive renovation, the building was put back into operation in 2001.

Today the station shows the former condition with platforms on the main line and the branch line to Dalfors, with goods sheds and the former station garden of the staff.
