The Inlandsbanan AB (IBAB) is a Swedish railway company based in Östersund . On behalf of the state, it manages the Inlandsbanan ( Inlandsbahn ) of the same name between Mora and Gällivare and the Orsa – Furudal railway .

history

Since 1963 the Swedish state has pursued the policy of closing down “unprofitable” railway lines. The inland railway was only of secondary importance for passenger traffic. In 1988 the Swedish railway network was split into a core network and several regional networks. The Inlandsbahn was given a special position because of its special character. With the 1990/1991 timetable, passenger traffic was nevertheless to be completely shifted to bus traffic, which led to strong protests from residents. The abandonment of passenger transport was prevented by a parliamentary election with a change of government in 1991. As a result, the Inlandsbahn-Komitee was founded, which transferred the route to a regional sponsorship, in which the neighboring communities and the Swedish state jointly bear the costs. (The section south of Mora was no longer continuously navigable due to closures from 1969 and was not included.)

The 15 neighboring communities founded a joint-stock company in 1992 to maintain the route , whose task it was ultimately to operate the route, to maintain it, to draw up a timetable and to manage investment funds. Financial responsibility for the railway infrastructure and ownership remained with the state. Inlandsbanan AB took over on April 1, 1993 its job on the railway line.

structure

The company is owned by the 15 neighboring communities of Gällivare , Jokkmokk , Arjeplog , Arvidsjaur , Sorsele , Storuman , Vilhelmina , Dorotea , Strömsund , Östersund , Berg , Härjedalen , Ljusdal , Orsa , and Mora . The largest shareholders are Östersund with 15% and Mora and Gällivare with 10.8% each of the share capital.

Inlandsbanan AB has two subsidiaries:

  • Inlandsbanan Turism AB (from 2005 to 2012 Grand Nordic AB ) acts as a tour operator and handles tourist traffic. In addition to Inlandsbanan AB (92.7% of the shares), the municipalities of Vansbro , Filipstad , Storfors and Kristinehamn are also involved.
  • Inlandståget AB handles the freight traffic.

vehicles

The central depot is located in Östersund (as of July 2013):

  • eleven class Y1 railcars (1268, 1269, 1283, 1314, 1336, 1342, 1344, 1346, 1348 and 1356 in standard paintwork gray-white-red and 1328 in white-yellow-gray)
  • a class Y6 railcar (1130)
  • two class Y7 railcars (1086, 1233)
  • four TMX series diesel locomotives
    • 1013 in blue - Grand Nordic design
    • 1016 in blue - Grand Nordic design
    • 1014 in red
    • 104 blue-gray-colored pattern - formerly DSB MX 1021
  • three diesel locomotives of the T43 series
    • 213 in yellow-blue
    • 221 in gray-white-red
    • 222 in red-white-blue
  • a class T44 diesel locomotive (273)
  • two diesel locomotives of the NSB series Di 3a (623, 632) - all green
  • two diesel locomotives of the TMZ series
    • 1413 and 1421 in gray-white-red - color scheme based on the railcars
  • two steam locomotives of the IBAB E2 series (1182, 1194)
  • a class B steam locomotive (1384)

Also in stock are the three small locomotives Z65 545 , Z70 716 and Z24 as well as a number of motor trolleys (MD) and work vehicles (MTR and MT). In 2016 it became known that in 2015 all other locomotives of the T43 series except for IBAB T43 233 were sold to Beacon Rail Leasing .

Since fewer railcars are needed in winter, some of them can then be rented to other railway companies - the Y1 series is relatively winter-proof and has proven itself over the years. For example, the use of the Inlandsbahn multiple units on the Umeå - Lycksele and Sundsvall - Storlien routes is documented.

Inlandståg AB bought five Alstom Lint 41 railcars in February 2019 for use between Mora and Östersund. The previous owner of the vehicles built in 2001/02 was Keolis Nederland . In the meantime, all other diesel locomotives are also part of Inlandståg's portfolio. The homepage also reported the purchase of an Rc electric locomotive . In 2019 these are:

  • TMZ 1413 "Betty"
  • TMZ 1421 "Cathis"
  • T44 273
  • T44 277
  • Di3 632
  • Rc4 1139 "Elektra"

Products

The corporation operates tourist traffic in the summer months, in the remaining months there was only sparse passenger traffic ("Helgtrafik") in cooperation with Länstrafik i Jämtlands län . Since the timetable change in 2012/13, a daily connection between Mora and Östersund has been offered in the winter months. In 2014 this traffic was extended until the summer timetable came into force. In 2015 again only in the winter months, in 2016 again until the summer schedule. In addition, there is a weekly express train Malmö - Stockholm - Uppsala - Östersund - Svenstavik - Röjan and back in the winter months.

In 2017 there were additional connections between Mora and Orsa and between Östersund and Åsarna.

Future development

In February 2009 Inlandsbanan AB decided on a development plan. This provided for various extensions of the route. The first thing that was completed in 2012 was the expansion of the Arvidsjaur – Jokkmokk rail line from 16 t to 20 t axle load - this means that the newly acquired TMZ locomotive series can now also be used over the entire route. The Sveg – Brunflo section is to be expanded for an axle load of 22.5 t. In a further step, the top speed between Östersund and Storuman is to be increased to 100 km / h.

It is planned to take over further routes:

  • the Bollnäsbanan ( Bollnäs – Furudal ) - currently without traffic
  • the Jörnbanan ( Jörn – Arvidsjaur ) - closed
  • the Mora – Persberg (–Filipstad) line on the southern section of the Inland Railway - largely closed

With the purchase of the new Lint 41 multiple units (2019, approval 2020), Inlandsbanan AB have set themselves ambitious new goals:

  • regular regional traffic between Mora and Orsa
  • regular regional traffic between Storuman and Lycksele (–Umeå)
  • Replacement of bus traffic along Europastraße 45.
