The SJ B (II) was a universal steam locomotive of the Swedish State Railways Statens Järnvägar (SJ).

history

The 2'Ch2 locomotives of the SJ series B (II) were developed from the 2'B1'h2 locomotives of the series A (II) , of which 26 were purchased from 1906 to 1909. From the B (II) series, 96 machines were built for the SJ between 1909 and 1919. The locomotives were built at Nydqvist och Holm (NOHAB) and Motala Verkstad . It was the fourth most popular steam locomotive on the Swedish State Railways (SJ) and in Sweden at all. Only the steam locomotive series Kd (139 units), E (133 units) and Ke (119 units) were more widespread . The machines of the B (II) series were built from 1909 onwards under the impression of the P8 series of the Prussian State Railways. During their service, they were used in front of both passenger and freight trains.

When the SJ began electrifying their main lines in the 1930s, a number of B (II) locomotives were sold to various private railways in Sweden. There they remained in use until they were nationalized and then returned to the SJ. In addition to the SJ, the private railway company SWB (Stockholm – Westerås – Bergslagens Järnvägar) also had three of its own B series produced. These machines were built in the 1940s after the SWB bought some locomotives from the SJ and was extremely happy with them. The SJ locomotives of the B (II) series operated on non-electrified lines until the 1960s. The last ones were not decommissioned until 1972.

Preserved locomotives

A large number of these locomotives are still available today, due to the fact that 32 machines were parked as standby locomotives ( Beredskapslok ) from around 1960 . This strategic military reserve was dissolved from the mid-1990s and the locomotives were either handed over to subsequent users for museum operations or as monument locomotives. Some of them were scrapped.

In Germany, the B 1266 was in use on the Kappeln - Süderbrarup museum railway operated by the Friends of Rail Transport Flensburg (FSF). Since 2007 the locomotive has stood as a memorial on the premises of the Schultz Recycling company in Kropp .

The locomotive with road number 1697 was sold to the Nene Valley Railway (NVR) in Peterborough , England . There she was used for numerous film and television productions. For example, it was used for the railroad scenes in the James Bond film " Octopussy " from 1983, where it portrayed an East German steam locomotive, slightly disguised.

The 1912-built B in 1135 was as a gift from the Swedish Railway Museum in Gävle north of Stockholm at the beginning of October 2016 in the Augsburg Railway Park transferred and arrived there on 3 October.

In July 2008, the Sandträsk readiness camp was finally closed.

  • B 1037 was in Sandträsk until 2008 and went to Bergslagernas Järnvägssällskap in Gothenburg , where it was under steam again in 2009.
  • B 1108 went to the Railway Museum in Gävle when the standby stock was dissolved in the mid-1990s, but was parked in Sandträsk until 2008.
  • B 1267 was parked in Sandträsk until 2008 and went first to Stockholms Kultursällskap för Ånga och Järnväg and later to Västergötland's Ånglokssällskap.
