AB Svenska Järnvägsverkstädera or ASJ for short was a Swedish mechanical engineering company that mainly manufactured rail vehicles and aircraft . The product range also included motor vehicles , heat exchangers , boilers and bodies for buses .

The company existed from 1907 to 1972. In 1973 Svenska Järnvägsverkstädera was taken over by Hägglund & Söner .

history

ASJ was founded in Linköping in 1907 by the brothers Carl Johan and Erland Uggla , who previously worked in Södertelge Verkstäder . In 1918 the company acquired the Arlöfs Mekaniska Verkstad & Waggonfabrik in Arlöv and the Vagn- & Maskinfabriksaktiebolaget Falun in Falun . Motor vehicles were subsequently built in Arlöv, and rail vehicle construction continued in Falun ( ASJ-F ).

According to an advertisement for the X6 railcar in the Järnvägs-Teknik magazine , AB Svenska Järnvägsverkstädera had production facilities in Falun (locomotives), Arlöv (freight cars), Linköping (rail buses), Katrineholm (buses) and Gävle (freight cars).

Towards the end of the 1960s, the demand for rail vehicles and trams was weak, and the liquidation of the company began. Despite attempts to manufacture motor boats, ASJ ended production in Linköping in 1972/1973. With the liquidation of the company, ASJ-F was sold to Hägglund & Söner in Örnsköldsvik , who continued the rail vehicle construction in Falun.

Aircraft construction

The merger of ASJ's subsidiary, AB Svenska Järnvägsverkstäderas Aeroplanavdelning (ASJA), with Svenska Flygmotor AB resulted in Svenska Aeroplanaktiebolaget (SAAB), later referred to as Saab AB , in 1937 . After the spin-off of Saab Automobile AB , Saab has been an aircraft and armaments company since 2000.

Road vehicles

In 1947, when ASJ bought Svenska Karosseri Verkstänena in Katrineholm, there was a production facility in which mines were first built for the navy. In 1954 the production of buses began. A few automobiles were made from 1960. Production ended around 1966.

buses

The first bus was created in 1954 in cooperation with the Linjebuss operating company and was a bus for overland transport.

Automobiles

The only model ASJ Sixten Sason was a sports car. It was named after the industrial designer Sixten Sason , who worked for Saab . Saab launched the second version of the Saab Sonnet in 1965 , which was based on a design by Rolf Mellde. The ASJ Sixten Sason is seen as the predecessor of this model.

The factory in Arlöv produced the Saab Sonett, Saab 95 , Saab 99 and Saab 900 types of vehicles .

Rail vehicles

Svenska Järnvägsverkstädera in Falun ( ASF-F ) built mainly steam locomotives of the SJ B (II) and SJ N series for Statens Järnvägar from around 1918 to 1920 . From 1922 until production was discontinued in 1973, electric locomotives of the series SJ Pb , SJ Of , SJ D , SJ Ub , SJ Ha , SJ Hc , SJ M , SJ Öd , SJ F , SJ Za , SJ Da , SJ Dm , followed. SJ Dm3 , SJ Ra and SJ Rc , whereby in many cases only the mechanical part was built and the electrical part was supplied by Allmänna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget (ASEA). In addition to the NSB El 10 series for Norges Statsbaner, there were diesel locomotives of the SJ Tp , SJ T2 , SJ T3 and SJ T23 series as well as numerous individual pieces and small series for private railways. In the 1950s and 1960s, in addition to rail cars and locomotives, trams such as the M28 were manufactured for the Gothenburg tram . The type C1 metro cars and, in cooperation with ASEA, their successors C2, C3 and C4 were built for Tunnelbanan in Stockholm .

In the workshop in Linköping ( ASF-L ) several four-axle diesel railcars of the SJ Y6 series were built between 1953 and 1957 .

Boat building

Folkparca is a type of motorboat that was also built by AB Svenska Järnvägsverkstädera in the early 1970s .
