The Tp series was procured by Statens Järnvägar (SJ) in the early 1950s to replace steam locomotives on Swedish narrow-gauge lines . The order comprised 25 locomotives , 20 of which were delivered by MaK in Kiel . Five more were built under license in Sweden by AB Svenska Järnvägsverkstadta (ASJ) in Falun . In contrast to the usual Swedish color scheme, these locomotives were painted green and had a red buffer strip.

The locomotives were used in Västergötland and Småland and later on the Roslagsbana and in the north in Uppland . They were seen in the Kalmar area and on Öland . In connection with the dismantling of the Uddeholm - Deje line in 1990/91, Tp 3500 was also leased to Nordmark – Klarälvens Järnväg at short notice .

The locomotives were very heavy for narrow-gauge lines. This occasionally led to derailments . Some sections of the route were too weak for use, so steam locomotives were still used there. One example was the Växjö - Brittatorp - Oskarshamn line , where steam locomotives remained in regular service until 1963.

Until the mid-1960s, the locomotives carried passenger and freight trains, later only freight trains. Then some narrow-gauge railways were switched to standard gauge or shut down, so that the SJ no longer needed part of the Tp . 15 locomotives were converted to standard gauge and given the series designation T23 .

Six locomotives were scrapped in the 1970s, while the other four remained in service until the 1980s. The two locomotives used on the Växjö− Västervik line up until the cessation of operations in 1986 were given buffers in order to be able to transport standard-gauge freight cars with transfer cars. The other two operated on the Nossebro - Vara - Skara - Götene line until it was closed in 1987 .

These four locomotives have been preserved and are now used at Upsala – Lenna Jernväg , Anten – Gräfsnäs Järnväg and Skara – Lundsbrunns Järnvägar .
