The class T23 is a Swedish diesel locomotive from Statens Järnvägar (SJ) for standard gauge . This series was created by converting 15 narrow-gauge locomotives of the Tp series (891 mm), for which there was no longer any need due to the conversion of narrow-gauge lines to standard gauge and due to shutdowns .

history

The SJ bought 25 narrow-gauge diesel locomotives in the mid-1950s to replace steam locomotives on the narrow-gauge routes. Due to the closure of lines in the mid-1960s, there was an excess of this series. Since the locomotives could not be sold, it was decided to convert 15 of them to standard gauge. The locomotive body was slightly widened and built on a new frame. The axle sequence was changed from 1'C1 'to D, the two running axles were removed and replaced by another driving axle connected with coupling rods . The locomotives were given a color scheme similar to that of the T21 series with a brownish-red paint on the locomotive housing and yellow lines on the front sides that form a V.

The locomotives were taken out of service in the 1970s.

Emergency locomotives

Most of them ( T23 113, 114, 117–121 and 125–127 ) were kept by the Swedish National Railway Authority Banverket from 1976/78 as a strategic reserve ( standby locomotives ) until 2003 and then partially scrapped or sold. One locomotive was sold to an industrial company, the remaining locomotives were sold to museums and associations, as well as to scrap dealers. The last active locomotive was used in shunting in Varberg .

Preserved locomotives

Today locomotives can be found at the Museiföreningen Anten-Gräfsnäs , the Museiförening Uppsala-Lenna Järnväg , the Grängesbergsbanornas Järnvägsmuseum (T23 126), the Landeryds Järnvägsmuseum and the Bergslagernas Järnvägssällskap .
