T2 / T21

The SJ T21 series , originally referred to as the SJ T2 , was bought by Statens Järnvägar (SJ) in the mid-1950s to replace steam locomotives on branch lines. The locomotive corresponds to the German type MaK 800 D (V65) with some specific changes, including a larger cabin.

The order comprised 56 locomotives, ten of which were built under license in Sweden by AB Svenska Järnvägsverkstadta (ASJ) in Falun . Four of these locomotives were equipped with a Swedish hydraulic transmission from the start and were first given the designation SJ T3 , which was changed to SJ T22 in the 1960s .

Since these gearboxes did not meet expectations, the other six locomotives of the series built in Sweden were delivered with gearboxes made in Germany. Two T21 locomotives were later redesignated as the T22 series by replacing the gearbox.

The locomotives originally had a characteristic red-brown color with a yellow stripe in the shape of a V on the front and rear. In the 1990s, some locomotives, including the T21 84 and 100, received a different coat of paint after they were sold to private operators.

The locomotives were used in both shunting and mainline service until the 1990s.

Emergency locomotives

T21 57, 58. 60, 64, 66-68, 70, 73, 74, 77, 81, 89, 90, 96, 98, 101, 102, 104, 106-108 and 110 were from the Swedish National Board of Railways Banverket from 1989/90 kept as a strategic reserve ( emergency locomotives ) until 2003 and then partially scrapped or sold.

After that, some of the machines were sold, including to museum railways . The locomotives were used all over the country, especially in the areas around Nässjö and Kristinehamn . The T21 could even be seen in Stockholm .

T3 / T22

The SJ T22 series had the same basic design as the T2 / T21, but had a hydraulic transmission made in Sweden. These five locomotives were built by the ASJ in Falun with the numbers T3 72 to 76 .

Three of them, T22 73, 74 and 76 were converted into the same looking T2 in 1959, the T3 72 and 75 became the T22 in 1964. The last T22, No. 72, was scrapped in 1978.

NBJ T

The private railway company Nora Bergslags Järnväg (NBJ) bought four locomotives of the same type as the T21, but without the special changes for the SJ. There they were designated as the T series and were given road numbers 21-24. These locomotives were painted red .
