The MaK 800 D is a diesel locomotive built by Maschinenbau Kiel , MaK for short, from 1953 . At that time, it was the most powerful machine in the type range known as the MaK rod locomotives . With the MaK 800 D, major export successes were achieved for the first time: 46 locomotives with technical adaptations went to Sweden as the T21 series to the SJ and 5 locomotives built in 1955 to the Turkish State Railways (TCDD), which were sold there as the DH 44100 series with the numbers DH 44101 through DH 44106. 25 locomotives were sold overseas to the Cuban State Railways (FCC). Other locomotives were used by various German private railways.

A machine came to Ireland in 1954 for the Great Northern Railway (GNR), where it was given the number 800 and was used from 1958 as the K801 for the Córas Iompair Éireann (CIÉ). It was supplied by Mak at its own expense for testing at the Ulster Transport Authority (UTA) and the GNR and then purchased by the latter. However, further purchases of these locomotives were prevented by the Northern Irish government. The locomotive was initially used in shunting service in Belfast , the CIÉ stationed it primarily in Cork . In 1967 she was decommissioned. In 1974 it was used again briefly as a shunting locomotive in Drogheda and was then sold as a stationary generator to a scrap dealer in Galway . Presumably in 1999 it was finally dismantled.

An operational MaK 800 D , originally delivered to the Osthannoversche Eisenbahn (OHE) , belongs to the collection of the Süddeutsche Eisenbahnmuseum Heilbronn .
