William Townsend Aiton
William Townsend Aiton (born February 2, 1766 in Kew , London , † October 9, 1849 in Kensington , London) was an English botanical gardener. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " WTAiton "; but it is also the abbreviation “ Ait. f. " in use.
Career
He was the eldest son of William Aiton (1731–1793), a botanist . He succeeded his father as head of the Botanical Gardens in Kew .
In 1789 he published the 2nd edition of his father's main work, the " Hortus Kewensis, or, a catalog of the plants cultivated in the Royal Botanic Garden at Kew ". He was a co-founder of the Royal Horticultural Society in 1804. In 1845 he retired.
