A Treibradsatz (in Switzerland also driving wheel set ) is the wheel set of a rail-bound traction vehicle to which the driving force of the motor is transmitted. Like the coupled axle connected to it , the drive wheel set also transfers the drive force of the motor to the rails. The equivalent term drive axle is also used in the specialist literature. The term drive axle is used on other vehicles .

The counterpart to the drive axle and the coupled axle connected to it is the non-driven running axle .

The use of the terms driving wheel set or driving axle depends on the context: since locomotives are talking about the wheel sequence and not the wheel set, the term driving axle is used in this context. If the component is referred to on its own, the term wheelset is used for it, and drive wheelset is to be used accordingly .

In addition to individual motors ( single-axis drive ), driving axles can also be driven by a gearbox , chain or drive rod from a central engine.

If the drive axle is designed as a crankshaft (cranked), it is called a bolster axle .
