Coupled wheel set

Badische II c , steam locomotive with two coupling axles (rear) and two running axles (front). The coupling rod between the coupling axles is clearly visible through the internal cylinders and connecting rods.

As Kuppelradsatz a is Treibradsatz referred to a locomotive, which is coupled to the other wheel sets. The term coupled axle is also used in the specialist literature and is to be regarded as equivalent.

The use ( coupled wheel set or coupled axle ) depends on the context, since with locomotives one speaks of the wheel sequence and not the wheel set sequence . When alone, the component is named, is it uses the term wheel set , and accordingly Kuppelradsatz apply.

The connection for the common drive is usually made by a coupling rod that is attached to eccentrically attached crank pins . This design enables the forces and rotary movements of one drive axle to be transmitted synchronously to the other driven axles of the vehicle . This prevents an individual axis from spinning or skidding when starting up.

The counterpart to the coupling or driving axle is the running axle , a non-driven axle.

The number and position of the coupling or driving axles (i.e. the axle sequence) is decisive for the typification . This also characterizes the running gear and the engine . For example, a locomotive with four coupled drive axles is usually referred to as a "four-coupler", "four-fold coupler" or alphabetically with "D coupler".

In a steam locomotive , the driving wheel sets are differentiated from the coupled wheel sets. The steam engine acts on the drive wheel sets through a drive rod . The coupling wheel sets are only connected to the driving wheel sets, mostly only indirectly driven by the coupling rods. There is also specialist literature on steam locomotives which uses the terms drive and coupled axle according to the same scheme .
