The X1 is an electric railcar that was manufactured as a Pendeltåg multiple unit for Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (SL) and was used in Stockholm's Pendeltåg traffic .

history

A total of 104 double multiple units of this type were manufactured by ASEA between 1967 and 1975 . Each unit consisted of a motor car (X1-A) and a control car (X1-B).

Technical specifications

The maximum speed is 120 km / h and the service weight is 78 tons. The cars were given a cubic appearance typical of the time and can be coupled together with the newer X10 cars and thus operated at the same time.

Each X1 unit consists of two car parts. Each car has three double doors on each side. Initially they were dark blue in color and had a gray roof. In the 1990s, however, a white side stripe was added and the SL logo was affixed to the front - on which the series number was previously located.

The cars have been modernized several times over the years. In the winters of the 1970s it was noticed that the trains weren't particularly well suited to withstanding the cold and snow. Because of this, the air intakes and the engines were rebuilt several times.

Interior decoration

The interior consists of seats in the arrangement 2 + 3. These seats are arranged opposite one another so that four and six people can sit opposite each other in each row of compartments. This interior has seen several modernizations. The lighting originally consisted of freely suspended fluorescent tubes, but was later integrated into the ceiling. The interior walls were painted gray and the seats covered with dark blue fabric.

In the 1980s, the walls were painted orange and the seats were upholstered in gray, while the next round of modernization saw the walls painted gray again, albeit in a different shade. The doors were painted in different colors: either red, blue, green or yellow. The seats were later reupholstered with colored fabric. For a long time there were small wastebasket on the trains, but these were later removed. The brackets are still in place. The loudspeaker system was never changed.

business

Normally four units (eight cars) were operated by train. However, the number of units was reduced to two in off-peak hours and on less frequented routes.

After more than 40 years of service, the trains were gradually taken out of service and scrapped from 2006 onwards. They were replaced by the new type X60 . At the end of 2009 there were still 20 units as reserve trains. The last multiple unit was decommissioned in April 2011.

Whereabouts

The railcar X1 3019/3081 was handed over to the Sveriges Järnvägsmuseum in Gävle on July 5, 2011 .
