The H series is an electric locomotive that was built from 1936 for the Swedish state railways Statens Järnvägar and for TGOJ . In contrast to the weaker U series , which were only used in shunting, the locomotives were used in passenger and freight train traffic as well as in shunting service.

history

In the 1930s, the SJ began to electrify branch lines. Light locomotives were necessary for this , because the existing type D locomotives were too heavy for these routes. These light locomotives with a driver's cab in the middle of the vehicle were the Ha , Hb , Hc and Hd series . They were continuously improved during the construction period until the Hg and Hg2 series were created in the end.

The locomotive had sloping engine stems on both sides. The pantograph was placed on the slightly arched cabin roof. The power was transmitted via a cardan shaft . Like all locomotives and wagons at that time, the SJ locomotives were painted red-brown. The locomotives supplied for the TGOJ were brown-orange with white stripes on the front and a white stripe along the cab.

Construction series Ha

As the first series of the H series , 40 Ha locomotives were built between 1936 and 1939 . Most of these were first delivered as the Ud series, although unlike this series they did not have a rod drive. It was redesignated as Ha in 1939. Within the series there were various variants with different bogie suspensions and springs. The locomotives had poor running characteristics, which came from the not fully developed bogies. They shook and swayed and so the original top speed was reduced from 90 km / h to 70 km / h. Some machines were supplied with SAB wheels, but these did not improve the running characteristics.

The locomotives were shut down from 1964 to 1972 and in 1975 the last locomotive was scrapped. A snow plow was built from the bogies of the Ha 472, which Nora-Bergslags Veteranjärnväg took over in 1989 .

Series Hb

A second series followed between 1939 and 1940, in which the design was slightly changed. These 22 locomotives were designated as Hb . The first locomotive was shut down as early as 1964, and the Hb 501 was the last machine to be scrapped in 1981 after ten years of stoppage.

Series Hc

The experiences of the first two series led to some improvements in the following series. The locomotives became longer and had better suspension. The driver's cab was constructed asymmetrically, so that the hoods had different lengths. Between 1942 and 1944, 13 locomotives of the Hc series were built. They remained in service until the 1970s and were scrapped by 1981. Hc 551 was converted from Hd 551 in 1964 .

Series Hd

The Hd series, built in 1942 with four units, was the smallest series. It was equipped with four ASEA KJ 77A engines. Hd 551 received new engines of the type KJ 77A (B) in 1964 and was renamed Hc 551. Hd 552 to 554 got engines of the type ASEA KJ 77A (D) between 1963 and 1966 and were renamed Hg 552 to 554. This ended the story of this series.

Construction series ed

Only the Hg version , in which the motor and drive were reinforced, was satisfactory . 56 of the locomotive, which runs at a top speed of 80 km / h, were built for the SJ between 1947 and 1951. In addition, there were some machines that were first delivered to private railway companies, but which came into their stock when the companies were taken over by the SJ.

These were:

  • 1948 by Bergslagernas Järnvägar : BJ Hg 225 and 226 as SJ Hg 751 and 752 (approved for 90 km / h until 1958)
  • 1948 by Södra Dalarnas Järnväg: SDJ Hg 501 to 505 as SJ Hg 753 to 757 (approved for 90 km / h until 1958)
  • 1950 from Nordmark – Klarälvens Järnvägar: NKlJ Hg 101 and 102 as SJ Hg 786 and 787 (the locomotives purchased in 1949 had not been put into operation by the NKlJ)

ASEA also built seven locomotives of the type for TGOJ.

The area of operation was, among other things, in the local traffic between Gothenburg and Alingsås , where passenger trains with B6 cars and a locomotive at each end were used. The same train combinations also operated on the Örebro-Svartå route .

Series Hg2

The last model in the series, the Hg2 , was created in the 1970s . These 36 locomotives ( Hg 654-660, 662-669, 671, 672, 674, 675, 677-679, 751-755, 757, 760, 771, 772, 775, 778 and 780) were only conversions from the series Hg , which between 1972 and 1980 were fitted with a multiple control system in the SJ main workshop in Örebro in order to be able to move heavier freight trains. The locomotives also received ATC and radio remote control between 1984 and 1986.

Whereabouts

The use of the Hg and Hg2 lasted at SJ until 1992, at TGOJ until 1993. Various locomotives of this series were intended for maintenance, but some of them were nevertheless scrapped:
